Bobby Thomas a license to kill.

A great bit of thinking by the management pushing Bobby Thomas up front and it paid off handsomely.

Based on what he's said after a number of matches it more seems that Thomas just goes rogue and decides to venture or stay forward if we need a goal late on

Annoyingly more aggressive than any of our centre forwards.

Wright as a CF is different to Simms as a CF just as they are both different to Bassette and BTA as CFs.
Wright uses the wide areas and looks to cut in, is more passive when it comes to duels (air or ground), great finisher, quick and powerful, good with the ball at his feet, and looks to make runs in behind.

Simms is a more physical old school number 9 who looks to battle defenders, not so great on the ball and first touch is generally bad, presses when required to conserve energy, stays central but a good CF to play off.

Bassette runs around a lot and presses really aggressively, challenges CBs for ground duels but not so much aerial, looks for free kicks often, makes intelligent runs but often seen too late so is offside.

BTA works very hard uses the wide areas and looks to exploit defences with his pace, not good at all in the air, plays off the shoulder.

So as you can see 2/4 of our strikers are effective against high lines but not great against a low block. (Wright + BTA). Whereas Bassette and Simms work well against a low block, Bassette for his Aggression and ground dueling, intelligent runs split defences, and Simms works against a low block as he doesnt really run in behind and stretched defences with his physicality and creates space out wide as defences tuck narrow

The most difficult games at this time of the season are against teams battling relegation, going for automatic promotion or the playoffs.
Our injuries are piling up and it looks like we are having to play with some players not 100%.
We do not have an easy game from here on in.
Playing wingers means we are light in midfield and that showed against Pompey. We lost a lot of second balls but they could not exploit the situation. Tatsu and EMC need to beat their defence and get quality crosses in or cut in and shoot. We were unlucky with an obvious pen.
Think Lampard is a manager who has a system and sticks to it. No surprises for the opposition, but if you are good enough it should not matter.
Never underestimate the nerves that come into play in crucial games. We benefited from teams losing the plot when we got to the play off final before. Lets hope we don't fall off now.

I cant stop watching last nights goal. I have watched it about ten times today, that little chip from Rudoni and the body shape and volley from Paterson. Just sublime.

and if you watch closely, Thomas dummies their two defenders. He's spotted it's well over his head, but he feints to jump for it, doesn't, and takes two players out the game to leave Rudoni free. Smart stuff.

Not a bad goal by someone many said was a waste of a signing. You can see how much it meant to him. Even Collins ran the length of the pitch to join in with the celebrations

I think that goal will give our players a major boost. You can see how much of a close unit they are. We had about 15 players in the corner celebrating and Lampard going mental as though he had scored the goal himself.

Said it elsewhere but it was a marvel that after 94 minutes of hard running across the width of the pitch from left to right, he still had enough spring in his legs to do that little shimmy that opened up the space to get the cross in. It showed just why he has so many assists

With regards to EMC being backup, even you must have the sense to admit it was a slightly left-field (pardon the pun) buy when the best player in the team is also in that position. Yes squad rotation is a thing, I'm quite clearly not aloof to that fact but wouldn't you raise eyebrows if for instance we dedicated a significant proportion of our transfer budget to another RB?

Resource management is fundamental in any transfer window and every pound has to be accounted for and be invested with purpose. I don't see that with EMC.

Last season when Wright got rotated we had to play Palmer at LW - clearly Doug was trying to rectify that

Think the plan was for EMC to have a season as understudy and Wright to be sold this summer - don’t think that will happen now due to Wrights injury

Can’t be evaluated until end of season, but if we are in 5th by only one or two points then ‘yes’

the same as Ben Wilson’s against Blackburn. Turned out to be massive.

If it makes the difference of finishing in the top 6, it will have paid his costs off, as the TV, gate receipts from 2 games (regardless of whether we win or not) should cover those costs. We really should sell out both of our remaining home games.

It's noticeable that for all our possession and sideways sideways backwards sideways style of play, the only goal we scored came from route 1 football !

Now I'm not suggesting we adopt that style at all, but sometimes I feel we are too slow and laboured with our attacks, and we should be delivering the ball into the box far quicker, preferably before the opposition has had time to get into shape.

Was an issue for large parts of Robins tenure as well.
Though clearly given the success we've had/are having, we must be doing something right but I'd like to see us trying to turn defences a bit more personally.

Didn't notice that in the game but saw it on Unseen - brilliant! Shows a great understanding from Rudoni to be able to take the ball knowing Thomas was going to feign heading it.

Definitely, we've had great results under Lampard, so I'm not suggesting major changes, but maybe (when required) we could try plan B occasionally before the 94th minute.
And I'd like to see EMC get past his man and deliver a cross now and then rather than looking for a safe pass all the time.

One thing I noticed from this was the Sky commentator being the same one that commented on the Fadz winner v Forest, can't remember him covering other games but I assume he must have.

What do people actually want though? Simms was finally given a run of games that everyone was asking for and generally the thinking was that Simms wasn't doing enough and didn't deserve to keep his place in the team. Most wouldn't start BTA (who isn't fit anyway) or Bassette i assume? So where does that leave you?
Is Wright our best Left Forward? Yes
Is Wright our best Centre Forward? Probably also yes, even though he was poor last night
He's scored more than the others would have in the small sample i'm 100% sure of that.

Are you forgetting that Simms scored goals in our winning streak before Haji came back? He's still our 2nd top scorer alongside Rudoni.

Haji is our best player and since his return, Sakamoto hit some great form, EMC scored v Oxford and Simms lost his place after Derby.

It is a bit of a cliche that the teams fighting relegation are the toughest games of the season. At the end of the day, they’re down there for a reason.

Last season, we beat Rotherham (H) and Huddersfield (A) comfortably. We did lose v Birmingham but that’s a local rivalry and looked like we were distract with the FA Cup final.

We should be beating Plymouth and Hull, both have poor records. Luton is shaping up to be a tougher game (to win) but they could realistically be relegated before they play us.

It’s all academic because I believe we’ll do over WBA on Good Friday which will be a huge win.

It may be a cliche, Mucca, but it can also very much be a reality. Hence, Oxford beating Sheff Utd last week.

It can prove tougher, because clubs at the bottom are literally fighting for their lives and they can pull out surprise results and bigger performances.

Annoying as it is to fans, they can seem to be trying harder all of a sudden.

Obviously, not all clubs and some clubs are just crap.

Plymouth were excellent though when they beat Liverpool in the cup, so they can pull out the odd excellent performance here and there.

What the problem is, is that many sides at the bottom can play really well on occasion, but completely lack any consistency to do so every week.

This is exactly why there is the saying to treat games like a cup final.

Anyone can beat anyone in the Championship and I am expecting a very tough game on Monday night.

And of course we beat Rotherham easily at home, but they ended the season on 27 points. A whole 18 points behind the club ahead of them. That's truly dreadful.

Plymouth are only 5 points behind, so that's a massive difference.

I am hoping by the time we play Plymouth, they are all but down, but I am expecting really tough games against Hull and Luton.
