Virtually the whole forum agree he's absolutely done.

It's cute that you're still cheerleading for Jakey Wakey. But you're very much in the minority.

As you yourself said, it was against Luton reserves so not a particularly stern test. Clearly we would much prefer to have a recognised CB there if Kitching’s out.

Yes but he was even being criticised for blocking shots on target. We will sign a centre half im sure but he had a decent game as did Allen once he took Andrews role in the team

He was criticised for that block because the guy picked it up 40 yards out and Bidwell invited him to have a shot from 6 yards. It was terrible defending.

And it's fucking ironic, but totally unsurprising, to see you complaining about people's opinions on a player last night after your comments on Raphael.

Interesting we played the 4-4-2 although in possession it was more of the 3-1-6.

Wonder if we could see it in the league anytime soon although I imagine it would mean Sakamoto starting on the bench with a Rudoni RW (Who would invert as per our positions below).

Hardly. My comment was hardly insulting. You did a throwing up GIF when you heard he was in the team!

He had a good game didn’t he?

I didn't say your comment was insulting.

I said it's ironic you've pulled someone up for a comment when you said Raphael offers nothing only for him to produce the one bit of quality in the entire match.

Bidwell was terrible in the first half and OK in the second. He'd get destroyed at CB in the Championship.

Raphael had a good game didn't he?

That’s what I’d have in mind. Brau will probably supplant JDS.

One thing Andrews did well yesterday was to get inside the box which lead to a decent chance. That’s what I’d imagine Rudoni on the RW would look like.

I’d probably like to see Sakamoto at LW if Rudoni is playing wide because his assist v Sunderland (A) in the league last season was a beautiful cross from a LWB position. IIRC, Rudoni got more of his assists from the right last season (validation needed).

This would be my punt.

While it’s a similar shape, having two strikers would you’d hope make us more direct.

Seven big chances against Luton to Hulls one for example.

In practice, this recreates the shape when we had when we played 5-3-2.

Torp and Rudoni operated high and wide, the latter in particular had a free role to operate wherever. Then Allen was asked to cover a lot of defensive ground. I’m not 100% sure Torp, Eccles or Shesf could do that as well as Allen did last season. I can envisage a shape where Sakamoto plays RW and Rudoni LW with Sakamoto supporting a lot more defensively with his energy. Torp did well in the middle yesterday, he got stuck in and won balls in the midfield which is encouraging.

The best team for a 4-4-2 is Haji, Simms, Rudoni and EMC as your attackers. Haji and Rudoni you’d imagine would have relatively free roles.

4-4-2 is just the defensive shape - as the position map shows in possession it is very different

Yep, formations are becoming increasingly irrelevant in the attacking side of the game.

The reason 4-4-2 is making a comeback is because it is a structured defensive shape but in attack can be position-less.

FourFourTwo YouTube channel did a good breakdown video on how Carsley used 4-4-2 to win the Euros with England (first time). In summary, the emphasis was attacking space rather and players had no ‘fixed’ position in attack.

You could see some of those concepts on display last night. Haji looked good attacking both wings and even having decent dribbles in the centre park.

Interesting. I think last night worked ok, although we should temper it given the opposition.
Actually agree with Mucca on the forwards for once, Haji was allowed to attack both sides which worked well, i thought he was a bit ropey overall tbh but hopefully it'll get better with game time. A lot of chances were created too, mainly for Simms and he fluffed the majority but at least they were created and the goal may or may not kick him on a bit. Although we've been there before with him.

if we continue with the 4-4-2 defensive shape then you'll likely see

Rushworth
MVE/KKH-Thomas-Kitching-JDS/Brau
Saka-Sheaf/Torp-Grimes-Rudi
Simms-Wright

Become this in possesion

Surely Frank has to see the benefits of this formation, or is he too stubborn to change?

Bonus of it would be that apart from left centreback, we would have two players in each position with EMC or Sakamoto able to cover the flanks

he's played it in multiple friendlies and both actual games

it's not 4-4-2 that you would have seen 20 or 30 years ago though

It was actually good defending from Bidwell when he seemed to allow the player to run into our box imo, if he'd have committed to a tackle he was practically last man and at big risk of giving away a foul. He gave the player limited sight of goal and made a good block.

Did well setting up the goal by running through space left by poor L1 defenders and laying off a nice little pass.

Remains to be seen whether he’s allowed the same space against tough Championship defences. Personally I doubt it and reckon he’s nowhere near ready yet. Clearly you think he is. Time will tell eh, Prick.

It looked that way to me. I feel like Saka gets fouled a lot without getting the calls from the ref. This is just the latest of many.

If Saka is allowed to run on he maybe gets on the ball coming across...
