The clean sheets are a good sign. Brau looks more of a defensive left back which is good

The booing of Simms is a massive disappointment. The perspective of some Cov fans of where we were recently, the position we’re in now is lost. Their entitlement reminds me of Leicester fans. Muppets.

If you had a higher quality player with the similar attributes of Rapha, he’d start ahead of Sakamoto imo.

His directness is admirable and had a little bit of magic that led to the goal. It was a v solid outing.

There was an element of game management at play, but thought we looked more potent in the wide channels with Andrews and Rapha playing. That said, Rudoni was a class above and put 2-3 chances on a plate for Simms to finish.

I actually think that kind of player wouldn’t start ahead of Sakamoto; they’d still be a bench player and we’d look to bring them on. Reason being, Sakamoto has a nice balance between attack and helping out with everything else / covering ground. On Saturday Sakamoto was close to scoring 2 goals mainly through his own graft.

Bringing the big guns on though; the quality was obvious to me personally straight away!

Well that was alright. 1st round of this competition never a reliable gauge of where we are, but I thought that was a decent performance. Some encouraging individual performances in there and good to see Simms get off the mark.

Who booed him? I didn't hear that at all. A few individuals sounding off at times, but that was the most I've heard his name sung since he's been here.

No, I'm disappointed because he should have scored a hat-trick.

His movement in the box is v good. There was a good move in the box where he did a spin-like move to beat his defender but the ball was just a bit too far away and ended up in the goalkeepers hands.

People think we need a bruiser in the box, we don’t. Simms’ headers weren’t by towering up above defenders, generally it was a subtle move to get around a defender to nick it in or he’s just in the right place, right time. See Sheff W 1st goal as a case and point.

He did miss chances but got the all important winning goal. You look back at Vik and all the chances he missed, you wouldn’t have predicted he’d be an elite striker, he led the ‘big chances missed’ by a country mile in 21/22 and 22/23.

He got in good goal scoring positions, got a goal and anything else was a bonus. Besides, had he scored a hattrick, it wouldn’t have ‘really’ counted by the ‘games scored in’ brigade.

Haji looked good today in bits and pieces but really needed to get him in a game where we’re creating those clear cut chances to really show his skill as a striker.

I find the comparisons to Gyökeres a bit cheap to be honest. I think some are going a bit overboard because Simms scored, and aren't really evaluating the total picture sensibly.

I hope he can kick on from it too, but I honestly think we need better.

I don’t see why we can’t be disappointed by Simms missing 3/4 good chances. He was clearly disappointed himself.

All my silly jokes to one side this is exactly it. People are taken in by his physical appearance. He can't win headers or hold the ball up consistently, it just not his game. Or Wrights, or BTAs. That said, I do think that is exactly the type of player that would thrive in the system we are trying to play. We need someone to bring the wingers into play and then throw themselves on the end of anything we put in the box. Which makes it a little odd for me we haven't done anything in that department over the summer.
Robins spunked 3/4s of the initial Gyokeres fee on those 3, which is a bit of sickener considering it could have been a game changer for the club, I don't see what his recruitment plan was there at all.

For me, Saka doesn’t take on defenders as much as I’d like to be honest. His dribble moves are mostly to create space for a cross or pass to a marauding fullback. Granted, he’s got excellent technique because some of his shots and crosses are perfect placements… However, I want to see our wingers beat men and structured defensive sets because that creates space for players.

Even in the first half, Rapha brought an edge to the game where he picked the ball and just ran at defenders, it meant two things:
1. Strikers were running to the ball with defenders chasing
2. The crosses weren’t looped in against a defensive shape of 8 players in the box, they were being drilled into with defenders chasing back

For the goal today, I can’t recall a game where our strikers had acres of space around them to put it cross goal. It was like a training drill.

My position is quite clear that, whilst I like Sakamoto as a player, he’d be the starter I’d look to improve on. 6 assists is a decent tally, but less shots and and goals than your CB is not acceptable imo.

Yeah I remember when we bought Wright and Simms and thought they were purchased for their height. Both have it in them but not naturally aggressive - either of them unfortunately.

It’s not a direct comparison. If we rewind back to 22/23, there were games where Vik missed many big chances, he led the big chances metric by a mile. IIRC, it was v Birmingham where we won 2-0 and Vik scored a penalty. He had 2-3 gilt edge chances that he missed before the penalty.

He got the winning goal and for arguments sake, had he scored a hattrick, the same people who dislike him would use the fact that it was “only” Luton in the Cup and doesn’t really count. It’s what people said last season when scored in the cup twice v Championship opposition, when he scored 3 v Maidstone, 2 v Wolves and against Man U.

The people who bang on about ‘games scored in’ only bring this up in relation to Simms. In 23/24, Simms scored in 13-14 games in total (iirc), Vik’s was only 18 in 22/23 when he earned a move to Sporting.

It goes without saying, before it becomes a distraction… Vik obviously had a lot more to his game than Simms.

In Raphael it's nice to see a winger with pace take his man on and can cross a ball.

Rapha and Wright were men of the match for me. Rapha ran his heart out and was completely knackered at the end. Fair play to him tonight. Haji looked class again. Overall a pretty ordinary game but we remain unbeaten and without conceding. A good run out for some.
