MR has said winning the pre-season games was not a priority, it was all about fitness and trying out various systems. Having several key and new players coming back from serious injuries, and having to settle-in the other new players, this makes sense to me.
Also a key thing is we were top of this league less than 3 years ago, with a totally different team, I know, but because of this it doesn't feel so daunting somehow.

I'm probably with this, although get a decent forward in and if Andreu stays fit I may get optimistic again! Just read a Pompey article on us, and they do a piece about our manager MR, and then write all about Andy Thorne!!

I hope Robins goes back to the tight defence model he used in the first half of last season, that might get us up higher than otherwise

Incidentally, in the rollicking autumn of Robins version 1, was McGoldrick a sole striker up front, or was someone else alongside him? Can't remember

I dont think that there is that much difference between League 1 and 2. I think we will be challenging for promotion

A top half finish would be a good season.

Too early to tell yet, it all depends on whether we get a goalscorer in (or find one within the club). That will be the difference between fighting for top 6 or trying to stay away from bottom 6.

I've not seen players like Alessani yet but I do feel like the tactics used last season to double up on players like Jones won't work as effectively now, especially if you're giving space to Andreu, Allessani and potentially Chaplin who will all present their own dangers.

I think we're much better equipt now and will challenge for top 6 if we get a striker with a little movement to supplement the aforementioned.

Football is a lot about confidence, if we get off to a good start and keep momentum and a feel good factor going I don't see why we couldn't finish top six . We have brough in some good players with experience in this division and Im sure they will keep the younger lads going if things get tough.

Yeah he was up front on his own. Team was something like:

Murphy
Christie - Wood - Edge - Adams
Bailey - Jennings
Baker - McSheffrey - Moussa
McGoldrick

For me it's as much about how Robins decides to approach the season in terms of our own set up than the players themselves. For two thirds of last season it was two steps forward one step back and he struggled to get the balance right in our defensive/counter attacking set up.
This year there should be enough creativity in the team once Andreu, Jones are fully fit and Bayliss, Allassani up to speed with L1 and that should translate to there being much less pressure on 1 individual to carry the goal threat. Until that point though, I can see Robins starting the season very defensively again and reverting back to playing counter attack football utilising Sterling's pace, Bayliss' dribbles, long ball to JCH/Biamou. I'm hoping it will work better this year as we have pace on both flanks and aren't such a scalp meaning more teams will want a win at the Ricoh.
Really excited to see our shape/lineup on Saturday.

I watched a number of Rotherham games last year, probably about 10 or so compared to 24 Cov games
In my opinion ( and I am sky blue biased) we are 5 or 6 players short of where Rotherham were last season.
Need another Michael Doyle ( 10 years younger) , of course a strong goal scorer and back up plus another keeper as good as Burge or better

You look back at that season and that run in particular there weren't many 'team' goals, the majority were bits of individual brilliance.

Regardless of last seasons success, I never really thought there was a plan of how we wanted to create and score goals, especially when we possession for more than 3-4 passes, and looked more dangerous on the counter attack.

Isn't Ogogo supposed to be the younger Doyle?

Still not fit enough
I think he and Doyle will share the load this season and Doyle will retire end of season and Ogogo main man next year
The key for me is how good will JJ be in League 1 and is he fit enough yet plus can Baylis continue his development.

I think we will be solid mid table till Christmas with robins going for tight and defensive set ups. Then a push for play offs in new year with more expansive and attacking football

Seems most think we are dependent on getting a new striker..............strikers cost money.............we don't pay out a lot of money on transfer fees do we ?

Adams - just signed for hometown club South Shields in the Northern Premier League (league below Conference North). Surprised how he never kicked on after leaving us

Bailey - played in India and Canada after leaving us and now at Yeovil

Jennings - was with Tranmere for a while and now at Southport in the Conference North

Goals are going to be critical and cant see us scoring many without McNulty or an adequate replacement, I would say 12th at this moment in time

We come 6th in league two and we have lost 28 goals from that team. I can't see us being near the top half as it stands.

I think top half would be a great achievement but not sure we're quite there yet. I can see it being a quiet season with us finishing just in the bottom half, say 15th or so. I think there'll be spots where momentum swings and we're up in/near the playoffs, but can't see us having the consistency to say there at the moment.
