I am part of the generation after the baby boomers often quoted. I live not far from an old couple who bought their house for £1,700. They were at a stretch to buy it. They are the generation before the baby boomers. They in turn were at a stretch to buy theirs. Mortgage rates went up to 16%. Look what they are now.
The difference is these days is the latest phone is needed. How about a new car? Holidays all over the world. Nice things ro have but not really needed.
I worked minimum 12 hours a day minimum 5 days a week. I sometimes worked over 100 hours a week. And I also studied to become a mechanical engineer at the same time. And I had kids. A lot of my work was for agencies. No holiday pay. If you didn't work you didn't get paid.
There is a massive shortage in my job. The pay starts at about 30k. My place can't get enough. Same as the whole area I live in. The problem is many don't want to make the sacrifices for up to 5 years. Then they moan that it is hard out there. Yes it is hard. It always has been. But in my day you pushed yourself to the limit knowing that you would be better off in the long run.
My eldest did the same. She is now married, no kids and an accountant. They have just bought a 4 bed house with land. My next one down is also a homeowner. He gets married in a few days. The next one down has spent years moaning how hard life is. But finally the penny dropped. He then did what he should have done years before. He went into training. He has now just landed a job with decent pay and good prospects.
I know not everyone can do well in life. But sitting on your arse and moaning about everything and not trying to do anything about it won't get you anywhere.
I worked hard to get to where I am now. I am 50 next year. I am now at the stage when I can just about afford to retire. Think I will work for another 10 years though. My little girl was 9 yesterday. My little boy will be 8 in a couple of months. I have finally taken my foot off the gas. But still no new car for me. My newest is 12 years old. I look a pauper to those who can't afford the new car they are renting that goes with the latest phone, best laptop, lovely holidays and latest gear whilst struggling to pay their credit cards.
My generation didn't buy what they couldn't afford. They didn't get into debt when moving into their first home. They were either given furniture that was past its sell by date or sat on the floor until they saved up for it.
One day I will die. The same as all my generation. My money will be passed down to the next generation. The same generation that don't make years of sacrifices and moan about ours having everything. It was bloody hard work.
The big mortgage thing, just buy a cheaper house if they are going to struggle living somewhere else.

What Astute says about training is right to some extent but not every body has it in their locker.
When I was growing up you could do a fairly menial factory job and still afford a half decent house on one wage! Those days are over, that's why I think it's harder now.
To get a half decent two up two down by me you need a £40,000 deposit and a joint income of £48,000 thousand. That makes things a lot more difficult than it was for us.

That's the thing, if you can't get a half decent house in a certain area then either change the area or be prepared to get stuck in to a bit of DIY. No point me moaning I can't buy a decent semi detached house in Finham or Styvechale and it's everybody else's fault.
