Just some thoughts on stadium selling issues.

I believe I'm right in saying that FFP rules are based on revenue rather than assets. So shouldn't any sale of things like a stadium not be included, instead being classified as a capital gain?

If it were classed as revenue technically couldn't an owner/holding company 'buy' the stadium and sell it back to the club immediately? Then repeat as needed to increase revenue as necessary? If bought and sold for the same price there would be no capital gain and the end of year balance sheet would be the same. Probably other taxes on the transactions (stamp duty etc) and the associated legal costs etc would probably make it a costly venture.

That’s is a great question LG, something I’ve always wondered myself ‘yet never
thought to ask anybody.

That replay was the day of my 9th birthday! You weren't alone crying.

Was watching it on a screen at Highfield Road....

Never liked being 9 and never like Sheffield Utd...

yes was there too - inside the East stand concourse
Very surreal us all singing at the TV - and I dont think we were talking big screen in those days either

What are the long term consequences of that company owning it? Would the plan be to buy it back on promotion?

Nothing has been outlined in terms of longer term strategy but I imagine that he would transfer it back if we were promoted. He isn't a horrible owner, he's just misguided and inexperienced and gets very emotional with decision making. It seems culturally he doesn't quite get Sheffielders. However I do believe he'd try and do what's best for the club in regards to the stadium. EFL think he's tried one on with them so again, we will have to wait and see. Feeling amongst our fans is they are wanting to make an example of us.

In regards to your first paragraph. Yes. Infrastructure in general doesn't count towards FFP. Apparently. However, why have ourselves and other clubs done the same thing? It can only be to change our FFP situations so that we can spend more money. So, that quite clearly is a contradiction. But FFP is full of these contradictions. These rules should be very clear but if you read various articles, newspapers, online reports etc individuals and clubs all seem to have different interpretations on the rules. Even the EFL don't appear to know what they can and can't ratify.

Overall it seems football is played in the courtrooms and in meetings rather than on the pitch at the moment.

I do wish that there was some kind of probing of transfers for suspiciously large sums, like the cash Wolves were throwing around. They blatantly can't afford it.

From a Wednesday fan. Not posted on here for years, since you signed the legendary Reda Johnson I believe.

Nice to see you guys back though, seems like its been a long hard slog. I have kept an eye on you and the issues your club has faced. I hope it's a positive swing now.

Hopefully we won't be deducted points and condemned to league 1 again but knowing us it will surely be our fate.

Also in terms of next season I noticed you guys had been doing some predictions. No reason as to why clubs can't be successful straight away at this level. Unfortunately our neighbours proved that. But funnily enough the current bottom 3 are the 3 promoted teams from league one last year so you never know.

I remember you! Thank you and best wishes to you too - hope to meet you next season. One of my favourite games ever took place at Hillsborough in 1987!

I lived in Sheffield at the time, with a Utd fan (who was also a bit of a dick just to make it even worse). Also had to sit in the home end as couldn’t get a ticket for away. Managed to keep it to myself until they won and the guy next to me wondered why I just looked at him when he grabbed me and shook me (in a friendly way, like). Walked out of the stadium and bumped straight into the prick blade I lived with.

Not the best football experience I’ve ever had tbf.

I have always had a respect for Sheffield Wednesday, ever since meeting some Owls fans when we played them at HR in our first season in Div.1 and they seemed knowledgeable and friendly. Blades have always been an alehouse team with completely different fans. Even at the FA Cup QF in 1987 they were decent losers as I recall. There was also a case of a Wednesday fan who was tragically killed in a car crash after a game at the Ricoh and that brought the two lots of fans together in respect.

TBH I've never forgiven us for giving them the chance to. Game should've been well and truly won long before they equalised but the team just seemed to be playing in 2nd gear and couldn't be bothered to up it. Only people to get angry at for that is us.

Oh i was ranting at us too, but i just can't let go of my irrational dislike for Sheffield United!

Yup, on the whole (Gary Megson apart), I have pretty much always seen Sheff Weds as the footballing side and Utd as the rough houses.

Having lived in Sheffield (the best city I have lived in, including Manchester and Liverpool), I always thought Wednesday was like Villa and United like Birmingham City.

Megson was a hooligan on the pitch and a disgrace.

But City fans every reason to love Hillsborough.

Dont know how much truth was in the story I heard but if Wolves get relegated to the EFL in the future, they will get done for their massive overspending a couple of years ago while in the Championship and might just get relegated straight into L1. Cant see them facing that prospect for a good few years to come yet though.

That probably won't ever happen unless the Chinese conglomerate demands all the free money back. They took the piss and got away with it because transfers were allowed through with no scrutiny
