From a Wednesday fan. Not posted on here for years, since you signed the legendary Reda Johnson I believe.

Nice to see you guys back though, seems like its been a long hard slog. I have kept an eye on you and the issues your club has faced. I hope it's a positive swing now.

Hopefully we won't be deducted points and condemned to league 1 again but knowing us it will surely be our fate.

Also in terms of next season I noticed you guys had been doing some predictions. No reason as to why clubs can't be successful straight away at this level. Unfortunately our neighbours proved that. But funnily enough the current bottom 3 are the 3 promoted teams from league one last year so you never know.

Cheers! What's the potential points deduction for you guys all about? FFP?

Really looking forward to a season in the Championship, im hopeful that momentum will see us have a good return but we will have to buy well over whatever transfer window we get.

Thank you. Looking forward to visitning Hillsborough again as it's one of my favourite grounds. Let's just hope we are allowed back in stadiums again by the time the fixture comes out the hat.
I might even applaud Westwood if he gets back in your side.

Reda ... now there’s a guy who polarised opinions. Big player for us when he wasn’t injured which was very rare unfortunately.

Looking forward to going back to Hillsborough again. Have some fond memories of that ground

I hate them (United) with a passion - I think it stems from the 98 quarter final and Neil warnock and them just generally always being a shithouse team

Hoping to go back to Hillsborough next season. My most visited away ground with some great memories: FA Cup QF and SF, Oggy's goal, etc.

What is the points deduction thing all about?

Yup, on the whole (Gary Megson apart), I have pretty much always seen Sheff Weds as the footballing side and Utd as the rough houses.

Got to be honest, at first I was like “wooo three teams with points deduction = city staying up ”

But reading up on it it’s bullshit. Teams were expecting to sell players in the window to get back under FFP before the reporting time but because of the virus the window has been moved to past the reporting date. They shouldn’t get a deduction if that’s the case IMO.

Haha brilliant comments. At least most teams can see who the shithouses in Sheffield are! Be great having your lot back at Hillsborough too.

In terms of our potential deduction. I think most of our fans kind of feel we have only ourselves to blame. Instead of adhering to FFP we went out and did a few years of unsustainable spending on really average players. £8-10M on Jordan Rhodes, £4M Almen Abdi, £3M Joost Van Aken etc etc. And we just didn't balance the books very well. And we have a very over emotional chairman that tries to do the right thing but gets it wrong a lot. He doesn't or didn't realise that you have to sell players and stay within the FFP rules. Then he transferred the stadium to another company and increased its value in our accounts to give us more money to spend which is the move that is being investigated by the EFL. Derby, Villa and Reading all did the same. Maximum points penalty is 21 I believe. Along with potential fines. We have no idea what punishment we might get but being only 9 points above the drop it could determine our season.

If you over spent then fair enough, but equally if you’d have had a chance to sell some players normally the virus shouldn’t change that. Maybe the rules need tightening generally but sounds like you should at least be given the chance to play by the existing rules.

Of course there's many in our fanbase that feel hurt and that we've been picked on but being honest I think we probably deserve some sort of punishment for overspending. It is in the FFP rules afterall. Our chairman is fighting the EFL on all fronts though and is aiming to sue them. It's a bit of a mess. Best we can hope for is for them to give us a swift less than 10 point punishment for this season and us stay up and then start a fresh next year. We have made efforts to balance the books in the last season so hopefully we will try and be more sustainable from now on. If however we were to go down it would be an absolute disaster and our 3rd venture into league one in the last 17 years.

10 points or less I'd still fancy your chances to score more points than at least 1 of the current bottom 3....

The annoying thing is we have been sitting on our arses for 3 months and they haven't been able to sort out what punishment to dish out which causes more uncertainty.

Selfishly lets hope they defer the decision to the close season and there's a bunch of teams starting next year on negative to give us a better chance of staying up!

If it relates to anything in the last six months I'd say something suspended points wise with a fine would be fairest .
Bit confused by the house in order remark relating to this season .
Is some of it related to earlier seasons?

TBH I've never forgiven us for giving them the chance to. Game should've been well and truly won long before they equalised but the team just seemed to be playing in 2nd gear and couldn't be bothered to up it. Only people to get angry at for that is us.

From what I understand its got everything to do with the financial sleight of hand in regards to the stadium. A Wednesday fan I work with thinks they are bang to rights but as pointed out they are not the only club to have done this. I knew Derby were also facing a potential points deduction over it, although I didn't know Villa and Reading had also done similar. I do seem to remember however that when Villa got promoted through the play offs it was a kind of shit or bust scenario, and that if they had failed there would have been serious FFP repercussions the following year. I'm sure Birmingham are also threatened over a points deduction over something or other too. We are entering the madhouse!!

It's because FFP is always a 3 year analysis. I believe the main thing the EFL are reviewing is actually the sale of our stadium. A transaction where our owner sold Hillsborough to another holding company he owns. I believe in our accounts, which we were late to release, we back dated this sale to give us more leeway with FFP this season. So the EFL didn't like it but at the time we did this it wasn't illegal. It was a loophole. And according to our Chairman, we have evidence that the EFL allowed us to do this. But now they want to make an example of us even though it was a transaction which was allowed in the first place. So... its pretty unclear what the outcome will be.

Like I said, many fans aren't happy with the fact we did this. As much as we ceave success you have to play within the rules.

That's right!

In our accounts Hillsborough transferred to Dejphon Chansiris other company and suddenly in the accounts the value went up from £38M in 2018 to £60M in 2019 (from memory). It was a loophole at the time but because other teams complained they've since clamped down on it.

What are the long term consequences of that company owning it? Would the plan be to buy it back on promotion?
