This guy looks like he could be quite a handful for opponents in League 1. Any sign of laziness and Robins will be on his case, so I'm not too worried about that.

Malaga played 3 times in their top league. This new guy has been playing in the Eredivisie since he was 17, with short stints in their 2nd division and 2. Bundesliga.

I maintain scepticism with these signing too. As I outlined earlier. In terms of attributes, I like these signings on paper!

I think Robins dropped Brown because of other issues, such as not being fit enough to last 90 minutes, or making reckless tackles for example.

Hiwula would be a better comparison. He was very lazy off the ball for the first few games and you could sometimes hear Robins giving him grief for not tracking back. Hiwula responded and quickly upped his work rate, although he's still pretty useless at tackling.

Beautiful in a teenage angst sort of way. I'm feeling slightly off colour today which probably didn't help!

Soccer reddit is an awful place to go for football opinions.
I once got downvoted into oblivion because I said defenders today aren't as good as they were 10/15 years ago... So the knowledge clearly isn't there because that argument is undeniable .. However

Let's say they are correct, we can hope Robins changes his attitude, and we can also hope he fits in really well with our style of play

Reddit is nothing but kids TBF. It really shows on the politics forums.

After reading this thread, I’ve changed my mind. He’s an awful signing, we should never sign from abroad. Especially as every signing we’ve made from the English league system has worked out perfectly.

I’d also disregard the fact we have a different scouting and management team in place now too.

I appreciate a level of skepticism, but it’s the same with any signing we make. We’re a L1 team, it comes with the territory. If players were consistent performers, had an injury free past or were a higher calibre of player, they’d be playing in higher leagues than ours.

Signing players from abroad comes with that extra element of risk in my opinion but I agree with your POV. Any signing by a L1 team is a risk unless they possess the budget to invest in a higher calibre of player - and even then they come with no guarantees.

Any one remember last year when we were all getting hard ons over the arrival of,
Bouwe Bosma
Reise Allassani
Ogogo
Brown
Bakayoko
And the imminent arrival of Chaplin,
And the return to fitness of Andreu and Jones.
I guess it's best to actually watch the new signing play before staining one's pants!

Its make or break time for the likes of him and Ponticelli imho.

I think the difference is now we have a recruitment team who are clearly doing in depth research. Doesn't mean every signing will work out but they should have more chance.

Even with the squad as it is and lacking a good striker, I think we’ll challenge.

That isn’t me being unrealistic or thinking with my heart over my head. We were strong last year when we played football. This year we’re on a better playing surface and have signed players who reportedly are technically very able.

Signing Bright would be another level, but eve without we’re definitely going to be up there.

Isn't this guy a possible Bright replacement?

The reviews from Reddit aren't exactly glowing:

"Not good, a winger with 2 goals and 1 assist last season. Has a weak knee"
---
He was a decent Player back at ADO Den Haag, after that he transfered to Germany and back to NAC but barely played anymore. If you get him back in to the rithme he might be good but it is probably a bad signing imo.
----
Such a strange signing. Was quite a promising winger at one point, he did very well at Ado Den Haag and on loan at Eindhoven, but he has dropped of since. Went on loan to Kaiserslautern where he was invisible and at NAC he was one of the least impressive players. He had some problems with a knee injury in the past which hindered his speed, but apperently he has recovered fully.

His attitude is often horrible though, he just walks around the sidelines when things don't go his way, looking uninterested. In the youth NT he sometimes got into confrontations with his teammates during games when they didn't pass to him or something.

He is still only 23 years old and he does have some talent, but he needs to get his head in the game.

Were the likes of Malaga/Slager/Manset scouted personally though? Considering all were brought in after a trial I'd hedge my bets they were recommended and whoever brought them in took a punt on them.

Tbf Brown and Ogogo seemed liked they’d be guaranteed successes. Think they were both recovering from long term injuries though?

In Hiwulas defence I think he genuinely doesn’t have a clue how to operate on the wing.

It's a bit of a gamble but if Kastaneer and Jobello both settle in it could be a very exciting season.

I've a feeling this guy may have come in instead of Bright, but if Bright came too then we could be tearing teams apart. I'd be happy to sell both Bakayoko and Chaplin if we could bring in one good striker.

That's probably our summer signings done apart from if a few go out. Pretty big squad, especially taking into account the U23's.

With the exception of Gunnarsson, these came from the lower divisions abroad.

It’s also worth noting that those latter two players were signed when we were absolutely skint and had no scouting network. It appears real thought has gone into these signings!
