HE tARGEtS A GoAl At wRExHAm

CODY McDonald is itching to get his preseason up and running with a goal against Wrexham tonight.
The Coventry City striker is hoping to be selected to face former Sky Blues frontman Andy Morrell's Blue Square Premier outfit at the Racecourse Ground as he looks to catch up on match time after missing the club's tour to Scotland with shin splints.

“It was really nice to get a run out on Saturday,“ said McDonald, who hit a post at Nuneaton, where he played the second half.

“It has been a long time coming this preseason and I suppose if you miss the tour * and there were three games there * you miss out on quite a chunk of the games. But it is nice to be back among it.

“I was a little unlucky with my chance. I should be tucking those away really but it is good to get into those positions in the first place and it was my first 45 minutes so I can't complain too much. It was just nice to get out there and run around.

“I have always said it is important to get a good pre-season under my belt and hopefully I'll get that this year, hit the season running and bang a few goals in.“

Although the 26-year-old started back on July 1 with the rest of the squad, City's only outfield signing from last summer was forced to miss the trip to the Highlands.

“My shins were really sore and it was a slight case of shin splints but hopefully I am over that now and I can move on,“ he said.

“I went to the Academy and did all the running that I missed during the three or four days leading up to the lads going to Scotland and a couple of extra days running so I have caught up on all that fitness work.

“It put me a bit behind on the football side of things but I like to think I can catch up on that. I'd love to be involved at Wrexham. Obviously it's up to the gaffer who he picks for the game but we have only got a couple of weeks to the start of the season so the manager is going to be thinking of that as well and hopefully I'll get as much match time as possible.

“I'm confident I'll be firing come the start of the season because I've done all the running now and it has been real tough running this year.
The manager has been really hard on us but it has been good and we have got it under us now and we can concentrate on the football side of things.

“And I'm just raring to go, and the lads are as well.“

As for the influx of new signings this summer, he said: “It's always nice to have a few more bodies in and the lads who have come in are good players and bring some experience as well, so we look like we've got a good team together.

“There's a bit of height in there as well, and I think you need that in this league.

“They are a good bunch of lads as well and we all get on off the field as well as on. We really can't wait to get going now.“

He needs to get goals in the next few pre season games, as do Baker, Sheff, Fleck to get themselves in some form!

Yep. Last week we had Callum and Ball saying he could kick and head the ball.

What next .... 'For the next game we want to wear our kit?' "We like to play with our boots on?' 'If fans turn up we will have an attendance?' 'If we finish top of the league we will be promoted?'

If he does stay injury free, he could easily be the Leagues top scorer next season.
