SAMMY Clingan has confirmed his commitment to Coventry City – and his conviction that they can exceed all expectations this season.

The Sky Blues skipper, key component in Andy Thorn’s midfield diamond, emerged as a target for Championship rivals Leeds United last month.

But City chairman Ken Dulieu rejected any prospects of a deal and Clingan says he is relishing the task of leading a side that has been widely tipped for a relegation battle after the summer departures of Marlon King, Aron Gunnarsson and Keiren Westwood.

“We have lost three very good players but we will all stick together and once we have our strongest 11 on the pitch I think we can compete with anyone,” said the Northern Ireland international.

“I’m an ambitious person and I don’t want to be sitting down at the bottom end looking over my shoulder; I want to win things and I definitely think that can happen here.

“There was a bit of speculation about Leeds but to be honest I’m very happy here. The fans have made me feel really welcome since day one, I’ve settled in and I want to do well for the club.

“I’m very proud to be given the captain’s armband because I wore it a few times last season and I really enjoyed it.”

Could understand him going to Leeds or anywhere else for sure in the coming days, but a bit far-fetched seemingly for him to commit to CCFC in today's paper (Clingan probably said this yesterday) and be in Leeds today for a medical.

to be fair its only as tenuous as some of the leads about people coming to the club and everyone laps them up

The interview would have been yesterday so it's not that far fetched at all.

And him commiting means jack, as soon as a decent bid comes in we'll accept and he's not going to turn down a team/club like Leeds to stay with us.

Still, I'll believe it when I see it.

The only thing I can find on the Leeds forums is a post about a week old saying he turned own £10k/w asking for £15k

Which is exactly what I said, that Clingan probably said this yesterday. I would though disagree with you though and say it is indeed far-fetched to think he said this yesterday and is having a medical in Leeds today.

And as for the stuff coming out the club and in the press etc. i always take it all with a pinch of salt. I only believe a player is signing when he has actually signed.

Well, if the club received/accepted an offer yesterday afternoon or this morning it's only an hour and a half's drive up the M1.

Tbf you're comparing a common thug with Sammy Clingan. It's like comparing Will Young and Pete Docherty; sure they're both singers but one's a nice boy and the other's a drug addicted parasite...

Ah. That's whats been happening in the last few days..it all makes (non)sense now(one for the Chris Morris fans there)!

I've never read so many silly rumours on here before. It's like all those stupid stories posted on facebook by chavs and people who never actually go to the matches..Is this what GMK is like all the time? I've never used it. I'm now glad of that fact..
