That's like saying Proswitch wasn't as bad as his debut game.

He was still poor.

Burge leaks goals at the near post and positionally is poor.

He may do ok but it's a risk and there is no evidence to say he could be a great keeper at this level.

That's where you'd hope however more first team games help. Can't do much about agility, but if he shows he's willing to listen, and the goalkeeper coach is half-decent, that can improve.

We'll see.I think he'll do alright. I know you'll trot out he's older than many keepers who played more games earlier, but there is a disposition for keepers to peak later than outfield players, so I personally would take the risk.

If it backfires? Well, it backfires. But I think there's enough there and enough signs of improvement to trust that this will keep going. Plus... he's ours, so I'd rather we ironed out the lumps and bumps than somebody ele's reserve. If he were to be replaced, I'd only do it if it were someone permanent as well.

I hear what you're saying Grendel but the budget seems to not stretch to getting in a better keeper and is burge really that bad? Not for me.

To say there is no evidence burge can't be great at this level isn't true. C'mob look at some of the saves last season against Bradford last minute and others of course. Plenty of evidence there surely.

However I understand his play and positioning is still a bit green but give the lad a slight break. First team breakthrough only last season and showed more than enough to warrant spending the budget in other areas which mowbray seems to agree with.

If Kirkland is affordable then why not, pay as you play type of deal with incentives would be a very decent signing... Also having him around the younger GK can learn about the modern game and how the business works, no negative in having him around if he is fit...

I'm not happy with the thought of Burge being number one. By the looks of it we're going to have a great back four, particularly if Mowbray can get Pennington back, but I really can't see the benefit of having such a good back-four when you have a keeper like Burge. He certainly did improve after the Worcester nightmare but he was dreadful for the Crewe game and his kicking is diabolical. If we seriously want to compete in this league next season then I personally think we need an experienced keeper.

Ha Bristol City away last year, over half went straight out without a touch.

Having said that, I'd give him his chance. He's a young keeper in league 1, he's going to make mistakes. We are going to have to be realistic and forgive a few next season.

My impression of him is he looks like an outfield player in goal.

We had a speight of poor keepers after Hedman - Shearer, Hyldegard and the hapless Fabian Debec - this guy for me sits firmly in that camp and it's only his "he's one of ours" label that's protecting him.

Mowbray has to bring a keeper of some description as cover and who would be prepared to be cover for this guy? He's going to have to be pretty mediocre not to be first choice.

We overlooked the position last season. Allsop great either but heaps better than this guy who makes real howlers.

We can a be proved wrong and I hope I am but this looks like a suicide mission to me

Kirkland was meant to go on trial with Bolton but they are away on tour I think. He was then training with Wigan while he waited for Bolton to return. He could just be training with Bury to stay fit.

Strong rumour up here is Kirkland will sign a 2 year deal with Bury. If this turns out to be true then we really are a feeder club for the Gigg lane outfit !

I don't think you understand what a feeder club is.

Burge will be number one. TM clearly likes him and the interview Oggy gave to the paper singing Burge's praises was no coincidence. We might bring a loan keeper in later on if Burge is struggling but otherwise i fully expect him to play the full season. Charles-Cook looked decent at Nuneaton, i reckon he will have one eye on the number 1 shirt too.
