China announced today a plan to get the nation playing football. 20,000 new training centres, 75,000 new pitches, getting 50million playing the game and making football part of the education curriculum exposing 100million kids to football.
Will that be enough for a challenge for the World Cup in say 20years?

I think like the rise in African football a couple decades ago become far more competitive and challenge the established nations but unlike the African teams (to date it's odd games not sustained) I think they will make a real challenge for World Cup honours. With such state investment and a seeming shift in Chinese cultural attitudes to sports like football then I think they will ultimately challenge the likes of South America and Europe where football is more than just a game.
