Any one else a bit worried? Seemed not to have the pace today to beat players or are my eyes playing tricks?

Agree 2 or 3 times I thought he made passes made to him look bad when other week he would have got to them easy.

Think he's quick over a yard but nothing special over 15. Should be playing on the shoulder of the last man not 10 yards deeper than the man winning flick ons. If we have a more dynamic midfield then he doesn't need to be the extra body in there, which he is at the moment. For me another player, along with Bayliss, that we're not getting 100% out of yet to compensate for a 37 year old in centre midfield.

Thought he got passed them on quite a few occasions and was being fouled or double teamed for a lot of the match

They were very good at little pulls and knocks to put him out of his stride and off balance. Needed a stronger and better referee against them.

I’m close to hitting panic button on chaplin

Doesn’t even look as good finisher as ponticelli

Just being played out of position, simple as that. No natural goalscorer wants to be that deep. Doing a job for the team.

Chaplin is only reasonably quick. What you do get though is a lot of stamina and graft. He also gives you a lot of movement and his anticipation often steals a yard.

He looked as quick as any of their strikers.

Another player alongside Sterling, Thomas, playing his first full season in first team football, that has to be taken into consideration. Personally I think Chaplin is okay and will only get better.

I noticed his jack of pace on the Sunderland game when he had the 1-1 with the goalie
I might be doing him a disservice but he looked slow then

Not particularly impressing me to be honest.

Isn’t he just on loan with option to buy in Jan?

Have to agree here he seems slow to me ? He can’t seem to get going being so small he would need to be fast is slightly worrying.Luke Thomas is lightening how you would want a 500k striker to be for my money.

On Chaplin just noticed Bakayoko has scored his 3 goals in less total pitch time than Chaplin has taken to score each 1 of his

I see your point here having to play deep to help with Doyle’s legs same as Bayliss but who replaces Doyle ?

Is this a serious thread? Mick Quinn was slow, but scored goals. Chaplin will be fine.

Funny u say that. Today I had argument with my cousin as i observed(for the first time personally) that Chaplin is quite slow and he seems to think hes fast

I'm not saying he's shit or anything I just thought he had more pace Thomas leaves him for dead and today the defenders made him look in slow motion.

Cannot doubt his ability. His touch at times is superb. He put some brilliant balls into the box in the first half as well.

We aren't playing to his strengths.

I do agree though that he certainly isn't quick over a longer distance.

Think Chaplin will be around 10 or 12 goals a season bit short of what we need from what is in effect our main striker

He’s not got a great top speed but he’s nippy. He does have quality though, his touch and link up play is good but he’s exactly what I expected Portsmouth’s 4th choice striker would be

He’s a tidy footballer. He is certainly not slow. He dropped deep in the second half today which was a bit frustrating but like clarke Harris he is always moving and working defenders off the ball.

There was very little service today and it got worse as the game went on.

I think he looks ok and a lot better than the alternatives we bizarrely signed before him

Think it’s hard to get any pace going when you’ve got someone behind you pulling your shirt!

I wouldn’t say he’s slow. And even then I don’t get the fuss. Does every small striker need to be quick? He’s getting in good positions and linking up play well.

He had one half chance yesterday only and the keeper had to tip it over the bar.

Little bit harsh Marcusp. Think it's more of a observation of Chaplin than a criticism.

Goals will come. He’s not quick like Adam Armstrong agreed.

There is plenty there in every game to be positive. His improvised snapshot out of nothing yesterday that went just over the bar showed his instincts in front of goal. It’s not quite dropping for him but it will. Long season.

Exactly that I seem to remember him being billed as really pacey. I was also wondering if he is carrying an injury or something or if others had noticed it before

My Pompey scouts reported that he isnt particularly quick over longer distances. I was always led to believe that strikers need only really be quick over the first 5 yards anyway. He’ll come good. I have every confidence.

He's a terrific player and has quick reactions
But he's a different type than Luke Thomas, Dujon Sterling or JJ who all have more flat out pace to go past defenders

Except that JJ is still some way from recovering that pace.
He beat a defender very neatly yesterday but didn't have the pace to get away from him.

This is not a criticism, just a plea for people to lower their expectations for a while.

A fair point
An ACL is a fearsome injury which needs serious surgery
Return to playing needs careful management

I agree. Those that are questioning him aren’t looking at his all round game (touch, vision etc) and his natural strikers instincts. He’s also only 21 and this is the first time he’s played regularly FFS ! The effort in the first half from a great cross (from brown I think), knock down from JCH and the keeper just tipped it over showed what he’s all about. Just not had the rub of the green yet still looks like he could nick a goal every game. I personally would’ve taken off Hiwula yesterday but guess robins considered the goal scoring run he’d been on which has been decent
