I went to the Hull game, where we played awful. It was like watching a game of tennis, ball goes from one keeper to the next, not one shot in the first half.

Now we have changed to an attacking, pretty game of football. Which is better tactics in my view from Andy Thorn, however we have averted to kicking the ball across the goalmouth. Against Scunthorpe with 5 minutes to go we were still trying to build it from the back and did not look like we actually wanted to score.

It seems it takes us so long to create chances, whilst over teams just have pacey wingers who can actually take on a man run down the line and cross it in. We never seem to have players making runs forward. King is excellent in his goal scoring record. But him and Eastwood or jukebox never seem to make runs forward they both hold up the ball which is fair enough, but we do need other options.

That is my rant over, just think we need to defend better, make more runs, and not pass it around as much.

Apart from that

Well we have never scored as many goals since we have had thorn in charge so i dont think we can complain that we are not delivering the goods, our defense suffers from lapses of concentration which is not helping and costing us.

okay but if we did change maybe having more runs and more options think how many goals we could score!

our defense is shocking from what i have seen. missing from one yard out as well ouch

Football is about possession. It makes me cringe to hear fans getting impatient and on the back of the players when they're passing it around or screaming 'shoot', as if they've completely forgot about the direct football snoozefest we had to put up with all season. The way they're playing under Thorn is the right way to go about it, no doubt in my mind.

i understand it's about possesiion but no point passing it around at the back and puting other defenders in dodgy positions, rather than playing it forward a bit get the strikers and wingers makign forward runs , than everyone being stationarry. Gunnarson is lazy as well

But they're not stationery, and as has been mentioned we're scoring more goals this way and NOT merely giving the ball away to invite another opposition attack.

What you're suggesting is basically what Boothroyd was trying to do. It's impatient and allows the players no real trust to play their game.

We invite them to attack with the fact that our defense too slow and weak

That doesn't really make any sense and has no relevance to my point.

I'm with ajsccfc on this - keep in mind we are also missing our 2 centre backs (Ben Turner and James McPake <3) who are beasts.

Keeping the ball means the opposition have to run around more - and also means they aren't attacking us. They play it til they find an opening/safe pass - how can that be a bad thing.
As mentioned above, I get wound up when people start jeering because we're keeping the ball! Grr :slap:

Name me a team that plays well every single game without fail.

We're what; six games into this new philosophy?

But surely you were doing so in order to make a point rather than just ask an unrelated question, no? The insinuation apparently being that a poor half of football invalidates the good work that's bookended it at times.

If that's not where you were leading to, I apologise.

i think we are alot better than before. sorry if i have not made that clear. I just think that sometimes we could have a few more attacking options. and not play pointless passes, which i think was resembled in the second half. Overall I think we are playing better, and i do agree with you on the point we do need to keep possession just how productive we make the possession is the discretion of the managers and players.

I'd look at it this way: the only pointless pass is a wasted one. Retaining possession never hurts your own side.

Poor, but we didn't keep the ball. Tactic was fine, poor execution.

Would Aidy's kick it up front and hope tactic have worked any better tho?

Thought not...

I am with you Rich - all this fancy dan passing to our own players, keeping possession, waiting for an opening, holding the ball up and bringing others into the game is just not on and as for all this goal scoring its just the final straw - all this leaping up with joy is doing my poor knees in - get it sorted SISU. What we need is a big immobile tree like creature up front and every player under orders that within 2 nanoseconds of receiving the ball they launch it long and high in the general direction of said tree and when it inevitably goes to the opposition we try a win it back before launching it long and high again and again and again........ Thats what football should all be about - no room for skill in the modern game.

Agree mate.
I dont go the match regular but this has got to be the way forward.

Keeping the ball breads confidence, players trust passing the ball to each other and they are allowed to express themselves a bit.

Got to better than the playground philosophy of 'kick it to the big kid upfront as quick as you can'

Having said that, theres no harm in now and again hitting the forwards early if its the right pass, didn't someone famous and probably now dead say, 'it's not about the long pass or the short pass, but the right pass'

right because fancy football always wins games right Rich? Tell that to all the Arsenal fans, i think it was 65% posession to Arsenal against Bolton and they lost.

Posession doesnt win games, goals do.

our defense is pants at the moment without Turner and McPake, granted, but that was the same under Boothroyd. I'll take points over posession and "fancy football" in this league. or are you happy to stay in this league another couple of years?

I'm still reserving judgement fully until the end of the season where we can compare whats what. so far, i'm still not convinced.

I'm just trying to find the bit where I said that Fancy Football wins games. I was a fan of Boothroyd, I liked the style of play in the first half of the season and thought that he should've been given the resource to play the game his way. Thorn's Fancy Football is entertaining, but I always shit myself when we play it back across goal. Still don't get why you pointed your post at me though Lloyd?

Was it Boothroyd that said 'passing doesn't win you games, penetration does'. That's right, but I think we have enough penetration and chances, unlike his team...

i'll have to run the stats (or someone else could) but Boothroyds team generally had around 10-20 chances a game, we just couldnt find the net! Still our problem now.

Our conversion rate i believe at the moment is that we score a goal every 13 shots.

Boothroyd finished with a terrible run of form that saw us on an alarming drop towards the bottom amidst dwindling interest and zero entertainment, playing a style of football that often saw us dominated by the opposition, even when winning at times. There's a lot of justified bashing.
