Oh come on. It's obvious what I mean. Football fans were obsessed with the sport as a whole. I would take great pleasure in reading the history of the European cup past winners or watching aidre Vs rangers in Scottish cup. Doesn't mean I had to sit there and praise those clubs I just didn't hate them

So you didn’t like Watford Blackburn or Wigan? Strangely you like Steve “cheat code”’Gibson - the Fl did us a lot of favours by allowing us to flounce a lot of rules that pissed off a lot of clubs by the way

I was about 5 when Blackburn won the title and I wasn’t even born when Elton John was spending money at Watford.

Clubs coming in and taking the absolute piss with spending isn’t something I get on board with, that’s no secret. It’s anti competitive and encourages other teams to fly too close to the sun to keep up. Wrexham are just the most recent example, loads of others I hold in similar regard.

I wasn’t even born when Watford splashed the cash and was a tiny boy when Blackburn won the league. Give me Wimbledon’s rise up the leagues over what either club did any day.

What if a tycoon takes over in prem and tries to buy lots of players for big transfer fees? How will you feel?

That would depend on what sort of tycoon it was. If you mean a richer version of Doug King or an oil tycoon looking to turn us into a sportswashing operation that is.

Of course you do, it's the contrary position to take.

You're completely right that it's hardly the first instance of a club being inflated by massive financial input unrelated to success on the pitch, though.

They may well be the first to do it with this degree of fawning, however.

Fair enough mate, I should have refused to support Coventry because they founded a league while I was still in nappies.

Not really relevant, we helped form the PL, we played our part in facilitating everything that followed.

When it comes to deciding which club to support, ie my hometown club or nobody else, it is relevant. It’s not a deal breaker.

Taking aside that I think English football has been ruined by ownership rules, not the Premier League’s formation. And that’s what the discussion is really about: should we allow tycoons to come in and take the piss or should we have some sorts of controls as they do in Germany.

I was asked why I don’t have a problem with Blackburn or Watford based on what those clubs did 30-40 years ago. If I were an adult football fan around those times I would have done. Wimbledon’s famous rise up the leagues at a similar time is just my preferred football ‘story’ compared to the moving story of a club that spent £50-100 million to achieve 4 promotions.

I'd probably keep following the team but the success would feel pretty empty. I know a Man City fan who's supported them since the 60s, he's pleased to see the club performing as it is but he's also said it doesn't really feel like 'his' club anymore and the success feels a bit hollow.

I don't think anyone is denying football is broken

But Wrexham are not doing anything worse than those that came before them. They just have more eyeballs on their project that's all

Famous old club, their history isn't wiped out cos of ownership

Look at Oldham. Would you hate their long suffering fans if they got some money all of a sudden?

All I'm saying is it's not a perfect world I get that but so many clubs contribute to that not just Wrexham.

Chelsea just got done for cheating and no one really cares. But a non League team move up the leagues and that's bang out of order.

It really isn't.

Lived in Manchester for a long time, and knew a good few Manchester City fans. A good few had become jaded with it and felt the club was no longer one they felt a part of. Not all, obviously, but a good few.

Success at all costs isn't the be-all and end-all for a lot of supporters.

And I've said countless times they're just the latest in a long list of examples. To say I don't care about Chelsea and their Russian oil tycoon who really got the ball rolling on all this piss taking is bizarre.

Lincoln on the verge of promotion to the second tier is a great story and they've done it without a tycoon. Luton went up from non league to the Prem without one as well. Even though that came at our expense I still see it as a great football story. I just have no time for clubs who in my opinion represent what is wrong with the game.

I'd be all for some of the controls they have in Germany. But it's never going to happen.

And when the PL was formed, which we voted for, it lead us to where we are now, so not much point in crying over something we helped to create.

I find Wrexhams owners far less objectionable than Man Us, Newcastles, Liverpool or even Stokes or Brightons.

The founding of the Premier League is unrelated to the rules concerning club ownership and football finance. On the contrary, in a different timeline we have an abundance of TV money making its way through the pyramid with clubs that are still in the hands of their supporters. When we welcomed in Roman Abramovich that's when it really started to run away.

I see Wrexham coming up into this league and dropping £50 million and it reminds me of what the game in this country has turned into. Hero worship of piss taking clubs while we look at Sheffield Wednesday's mess (Lesta's too now) and ask 'how did this happen?'.

I think the distaste for Wrexham stems from who rather than how. There's not a lot of love for the Yanks in general atm

Jack Walker was more palatable as he was local man made good. Also, I don't think we really knew just what form the genie would take at that point!

Yeah I lived in Manchester in the mid 80’s and sometimes went to Maine Road. They were in the second division - Mick mccarthy was the captain. Booed off every week when they lost and a laughing stock. I’m sure they’d want those times back instead of Premier league and Champions league success. Who do these “jaded” fans support now? Salford?
