The magic number is something that allows you to have a fair go at staying up with enough saved over as insurance if you don’t. As I’ve said before though, there’s a big question mark over King himself. If he sells up to someone with deeper pockets that changes the equation somewhat.

Spot on. Have read some rumours that parachute payments are possibly being scrapped in the not too distant future. If we went for it spending tens of millions on transfer fees / wages etc. and failed to stay up, then the plug was pulled on parachute payments, we would be fucked. First we need to go up, of course (which I think we will).

It's 6 points. Why wouldn't we want them to go up with us.

I would be very happy for Middlesbrough to go up in 2nd and us 1st. I wouldn't have a problem if it was the other way round.

But this is the Championship. We just totally outplayed Stoke yet we had to wait until at the end of the game to get the winner. We only got a draw against Oxford. Middlesbrough were flying with 6 wins on the bounce but then lost to us. Their next 2 games were draws against the sides in 22nd and 23rd.

We need the gap to increase between us, Middlesbrough and Ipswich to make it easier for ourselves. We're only 2 defeats from being in 3rd if the other results go against us. All the top sides have won their last 2 games other than Middlesbrough. It can change so quickly.

I think there would have to be a phased withdrawal. You can't have teams committing to spending plans and then have the rug pulled after the event.

When people talk about going up and facing teams they talk is about Arsenal Mac city or Liverpool ,Staying up is not about getting results against these teams anything you get against them is a bonus. You have to make sure you have a team strong enough to mix it with the rest of the Premier League.I feel sure FL will give us a team we'll need to do that.
Enjoy the ride.

My fear too
It will be transition of course but it would make me quite proud if Doug continued his mantra even if it negatively affected him and our club

Our wage bill will rise if we are promoted even if we don’t sign anyone. Every player will have promotion clauses. This idea we can just go up and pretend to still be a championship club is a nonsense.

Fair enough. To my mind if Middlesbrough lose tonight they are all but gone as a threat to us. Effectively 9 points behind with 11 to play, in terrible form, and with tough games on the horizon.

I think people are over thinking it at times, A blues win has got to be the best for us, and that doesn't mean Boro won't still take points off other autos rivals when they play them.

The notion we want Boro in good form to play others is nonsense.

Them dropping 3 points here would mean they have to go to war against the others.

As much as they’re saying spend like Sunderland and we’re guaranteed safety!

Like it or not we’ll be a PL club with PL costs.

I imagine because even if we win tomorrow, we're still not likely to finish above you, neither are Ipswich and both of us and Ipswich certainly aren't.

And before anyone says "What about Hull, Millwall, even Wrexham...?" Just no. It's not happening.

Nowhere near the best side the league has ever seen tbh.

Compare us (or even yourselves for that matter) to the likes of Fulham when they went up with Mitro and Co...Not even close.

And again, no one has suggested any different to the last line about having PL costs.

I've never put an arbitrary figure on what we should or should not spend, all I've said is don't put us in hoc for another decade trying too stay up.

Theirony being that in an earlier post you accused me of making things up in my head to get angry!

But will be less likely to do so if you lose tonight. The notion that any Coventry fans is rooting for a Middlesbrough win tonight blows my mind.

Who said anything about guarantees? He’s talking about aiming for relegation FFS. We will lose money at this level. And look at Leicester and Luton, there’s no guarantee of success post relegation. If all you care about is minimising losses we should have stayed in L1 playing in Northampton. Because this club is only sustainable in a smaller ground with much lower wages or in the PL. so if you don’t want the latter and you don’t want to lose money, you’re advocating for that. So no, he and you are not right actually.

Leicester did get promoted on relegation last time.

Anyone with half a brain (so to be fair not you) can see that unplanned and unbudgeted spending can cause big issues going forward if you don’t have an owner with unlimited cash.

Although now it’s losing money the asset value of the players are far higher than the amortised figures in the accounts - so the club financially is stable.

It has to be managed sensibly and it’s a difficult challenge

Fortunately we have king in charge of it not an idiot like you

They won’t be scrapped - the only way that’s happening is if the PL negotiate only two promotions maximum

Think we've been at least 30 points off the autos the last two seasons, and nearly as much the season before that as well.
Crazy turnaround, although the parachute teams not performing this season has been a blessing

The post you started defending was suggesting we spend £50m on paying off the mortgage early. I suggested our long term financial future would be better served spending that £50m not on avoiding a relatively small and budgeted for interest payment but instead on increasing our chances of staying up and earning enough to cover our wage bill. You claimed I “didn’t get it”.

Parachute payments exist so that clubs that are relegated are not “in hoc”. And we ran up £70m of debt outside the PL by fucking about with shit owners and madcap plans to get the stadium.
