PHIL Brown has emerged as the latest man on Coventry City's shortlist for the vacant manager's job.

The former Hull City boss is currently out of work since being sacked by Preston North End last season and is understood to have been interviewed by the Sky Blues yesterday as the search for Andy Thorn's replacement gathers pace.
City chiefs Tim Fisher and development director Steve Waggott are believed to have held a marathon session in London where they ran the rule over candidates, including caretaker Richard Shaw, and the club may be keen to make an announcement before supporters get the chance to grill the pair at tomorrow's planned fans' forum at the Standard Triumph Club.
Former Academy director Richard Money is also definitely on the shortlist while other names being linked with the job include former Watford manager Sean Dyche, failed Ipswich and QPR boss Jim Magilton and ex-Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell.
One man who some fans would like to see back at the club after his tenure was cut short is Eric Black, currently assistant to former City No.2 Steve Kean at Blackburn Rovers.
The Telegraph understands that the 48-year-old coach, who still lives in Leamington, was approached about coming back to the club after Aidy Boothroyd was sacked but turned it down at the time when he was still assisting Steve Bruce at Sunderland.
Brown, meanwhile, takes credit for being the first man to have got Hull promoted to the top flight in the club's 104-year history by winning the Championship play-offs in 2008. More recently, however, he couldn't save Preston from the drop when he took over from Darren Ferguson in January 2011 and was sacked last December after failing to inspire a revival in League One.

On Brown:

All 3 strikers got injured, and then the club went from 2nd in the league, with one game in hand to go top, to 10th in the league. Many fans put this down to playing "square pegs in round holes", as seen in the 5-2 loss away to Charlton, where left-back Steven Smith was played on the left wing, whereas left-winger Paul Parry had to deputise at left-back.

Also, the signings he had made, Ian Ashbee, Juvhel Tsoumou, and Keammar Daley were not good enough, or "past it". This led to a club announcement on 14 December 2011, informing the fans that Brown and assistant Brian Horton had left the club with immediate effect, after a run of bad results.

No Wise or Wilder mentioned?

Although thankfully no Ince, Connor or Staunton either.

I think the 9 man shortlist is a lot different to what the fans think it is.

Sean Dyche is still obviously keen. He has the Chesterfield job "to walk into", but he's clearly still hanging around for the City job. He must fancy his chances to risk losing the other position.

Would you have preferred Ince, Southgate, Connor, Staunton??

Hopefully the answer to that is going to be no.

And for people who say that Brown is the answer, that is only the case if the question is "What's orange and full of shit?"

You say succeeded, but the best win ratio he has in any job as manager is 33%.

Last job was 29%. That's no better than any of our other managers we've had apart from Andy Thorn.

Just saying like.

For me Brown is symptomatic of the media-friendly (eg Sky) group of managers (Reid, Bruce etc) who have had only one decent gig and due to their contacts keep getting other gigs.

Dyche is an interesting one and Diehard Si may well be onto something with the Chesterfield comment.

Wouldn't be disappointed with Dyche.

Just hope it's pronounced Dysh, otherwise my above comment will look a little suspect.

Id be happy with Dyche, but still would like Wise as first option.

What about Hull City miracle worker Phil Brown?

I'm not at all sure about Dyche. Just the one season and made 11th place with Watford.

Jury still out for me.

I will be deeply saddened if it is Phil Brown though and not too much happier if it is Kevin Blackwell.

What about the 'won just 1 game in the last 15 at Hull' worker?

And if he's a miracle worker why hasn't he simply walked into another job after his sacking last year and instead just gone into to football punditry?

Why haven't clubs been clamouring for his services if he is so good?

So that season when he kept Hull in the Perm counts against him? Surely that will have dragged the ratio right down.

Stats don't tell the whole story at all.

Agree.

He did really well to keep Hull in the Premier, but it has been pretty much downhill since then and if he's so good why has he been out of work so long and no-one else snapped up his services?

Has Brown done you a dis service somewhere down the line mate? Why are you so against him? He's got experience, something most of the others that have been mentioned don't.

Can't say I'd over the moon with Brown, though I wouldn't be as gutted as I would be with Blackwell or Magilton. Wouldn't be unhappy with Dyche but, for some reason, I just don't see Wise as any benefit to us...

Because he's had his moment in the sun and then failed since.

Last job 29% win ratio.

Not good enough for what we require. That will get us nowhere other than into midtable mediocrity.

It's probably down to 4 now.
Dyche, brown, Blackwell and Wise would be my guesses.

Otis, posters on here will be calling you a negative non supporter for your views on Brown, even though its your opinion.

I totally agree with your opinion on Brown, 29% win ratio at Prerston and it was in this league as well !!!!!! a very high grade CV indeed with a wining record, my arse

God help us if Brown is the messiah to re-build our club.

Brown is not a good option in my opinion. We've been there done that with managers who have taken teams up once. Doesn't make them a good manager.

Dyche for me is the best of that bunch. Watford fans will tell you how highly they rated him. And 11th place in the championship with a budget similar to ours is something not to be snared at.

I'm pretty sure if we let dyche join chesterfield and we opt for brown, come may we will regret it.

Lucky for West Brom they weren't obsessed with Hodgson's Liverpool stats when deciding whether to hire him.

One bad experience doesn't make for a bad Manager. Sometimes things don't click.
