City to sign Barton but Deegan heading for exit

COVENTRY City are hoping to sign Preston North End midfielder Adam Barton * and the Sky Blues could balance their wages budget with Gary Deegan moving to Hibernian.
The pair had medicals yesterday and the respective clubs are looking to wrap up contract negotiations over the weekend.

If the two deals go through it will offer City boss Andy Thorn a radically different midfield option * Barton, a slim 6ft 2ins playmaker, replacing Deegan, the pugna cious 5ft 9ins `Pitbull' * and give both players the chance to re-boot careers that have been blighted by injuries.

Blackburn-born Barton was released by his hometown club because of a back problem but, given a second chance by neighbours Preston, earned a full cap for Northern Ireland in 2010 before switching allegiances to the Republic and chalking up five Under-21 appearances. His rapid progress saw him being talked of as a £5million Premier League prospect * Liverpool reportedly leading the chase * but that prospect was shattered in February when he suffered a horrific injury against Walsall, breaking his leg in two places and dislocating his ankle.

Although he is back in full training, 21-year-old Barton does not figure in Lilywhites boss Graham Westley's plans and has been made available for a nominal fee. and it seems as if Deegan is now surplus to requirements at the ricoh after he was given permission to head north and discuss the prospects of joining sky Blues old boy James McPake at Easter road.

seen as an exciting prospect when he arrived from Bohemians in January 2010, he suffered a stress fracture of the ankle that summer and missed virtually the whole of the 2010/11 season, returning for a 15-minute substitute stint in the final match at norwich.

He was an in-and-out performer last term and was suspended by the club for two weeks in June when a twitter exchange with McPake, which included a joking reference to the ira, was picked up by the national press.

Shame we can't have both. This means that we will still be a body short in midfield, though if given the choice of taking one of them I would have Barton.

Agreed we will need more bodies in midfield but don't think deegan going is a great loss, looked very average last season imo

I think Deegan could be a good player, Barton was once tipped for the top and was linked with Liverpool a few years ago! When this goes through we will have improved the squad but still lacking 2 or 3 players!

Agree LN - looks like we will have to make do with what we have though

At Nuneaton GD was looking very stocky, almost like Super Mario wearing a Brazil outfit!
I hope we'll get Bruno though.

No great loss imo. Barton is a much greater prospect than he ever was.
My only regret is that I'm not a gambler(I've no intention to start now), but I'd be a grand richer today wouldn't I Astute?

Was Barton one of the lads who leaked PNE team plan for Westley's first match? It should be okay for us we don't seem to have a game plan, boom-boom

Never saw much in Deegan, almost as inept as R'OD.................have to have reservations about a player who has had such horrific injuries as well in Barton. We do take some gambles. I just hope we don't have our new Sherwood/O'Neil !!

Deegan has never really done anything of note, so I am not too fussed, plus suffering a stress fracture is alsways a concern.

Apparently Barton was rated, and the Preston boss is obviously mental, but there have to be reservations about a player coming back from such a big injury. Ideally you would like to bring him in to the team slowly, however with the lack of bodies we have we could be expecting him to play a majpr part.

Could be good but we are still short in central midfield

When he was good I loved him, but I don't think he ever strang two good performances together. He was much more effective from the bench, and is a better reader of the game than most of our recent CM's. But he had too many games (especially when starting) where he couldn't pass it five yards. It felt like Thorn didn't like him, so this is hardly a surprise.

Fantastic bit of business. Get rid of the idiot Deegan who is just an awful footballer and a good passer of the ball in Barton comes in.

Barton just never fitted into Westley's long ball game at Preston. I think with him coming into a passing team we have he will shine.

The lad was being watched by Liverpool, Stoke and Wolves when they were in the Premiership so there is something about him.

Anyone know what kind of fee Deegan will bring? Seeing as we signed him for about 30k from memory.

Hibs got McPake on a free so could be the same?

Haven't heard a figure mentioned anywhere.

I get the feeling Deegan may have been told to look for another club after his little comment on twitter!

Fleck can't play as a central midfielder. Behind the strikers or out wide but not as an orthodox central midfield player.

Fleck isn't a CM, Brown isn't a CM and neither is Kilbane so it will be square peg in round hole.
