I'm taking my seven-year-old. They are his heroes. I remember feeling the same about players when I was his age.

Not quite. He does prefer the red kit to the white though.

I guess it just depends on the kid and the parents doesn't it? When I was 7-14 I lived breathed and ate football and would be out all day playing football.

Nowadays kids probably only know players from their ratings on FIFA.

There are plenty of reasons for the above. Football is a lot more expensive these days is 1 reason.

As kids we played on the local farmers grass field and we had coats as goalposts.
Played every night until dark (or the farmer arrived)
Morris Engines apprentice. First year we had football practice every day from 7:30 til 9:30 with ex CCFC Player Ron Floyd.
Still playing twice weekly at 58 and it's the only time I have paid to play football.
They don't know what they are missing.

They stopped for health and safety reasons.
Just reminded me of the giant ice slide we always created on the school playground during winter months.
50 yards long and I can't remember any kids going into school with eggs on their heads.

My kids are always playing football. They both play for teams every week home and away. My oldest who's ten is managed by a very well known ex city player.

I think football is built into lads metabolism.
If a football bounces towards me in a park or beach I can't resist a half volley.
Apologies to all those kids that have lost balls in the sea, up trees or in lakes !!

I think a lot of it is to do with the parents. I don't want my kids sitting about the house in front of the telly or glued to the x box, of course they do play on games and watch tv etc but not permanently. They need to get out of the house and do a bit of running about kicking the ball with there mates. It gives them good exercise to which is a good thing.

valiant thats great(honestly)but thats organised footy.

i think its important kids play for fun in the street too, no 5-6pm booking of astro turn pitches etc

just playing for fun till the sun goes down.

Valiant I totally agree (as opposed to winding you up the other day- apologies )

I am completely the same with my kids, yes they do watch some telly and play some games on the computer but I try to get them out playing sport or doing other things as much as possible.

They both love football (boy and girl) and both play at school, and out of school, but do other sports as well as I dont want them to turn into some of their mates that just sit in and get repetive strain injury of their thumbs on the phone all the time.

Re someone asking whether they play at school, its yes most the the time at break and lunch, and the only reason my kids dont play on the street like i used to is the traffic on my road.

yeh i guess street footy s dangerous when you thinka bout it from parents POV

especially with broken britain, more chance of dumb uninsured racers or gang members cuasing trouble

im glad they still play at school, when it left afte rmy a levels it hit me how much for granted i had took playing a game a day.

We used to jump the fence and use the pitch at Freddie Birds all the time, it was ace. The day they put the big fence up, football died a little.

now you are getting in the whole "would you let your kid play out in the street these days" argument. Things are a lot different now to 20, even 10 years ago.

More teenage kids now have probably stabbed somebody or joined a gang than played Wembley Doubles or a game of chance

When I was a lad we played anywhere. Didn't matter if it was on grass or concrete. The most popular lad was the one who could afford a football.

My older kids were the same except they always had footballs. My 12 year old daughter loves playing football. My youngest has now started playing. He is 4 in 2 weeks. Will be using my zimmer frame as goalposts when he gets older. I have started to find out my body can't do as my mind thinks it can. Not too much of a problem though as I am a GK.

We had a fence in the street that was perfect set with the columns to make a natural goal. Any long range shot that went airborne zeroed in to smack the front room window perfectly in line with it, which made for some hairy moments when you played with one of those raggedy balls that soaked up the rain and got really heavy. No broken windows luckily, but a lot of shouting.
