Otium Entertainment Group Limited, trading as Coventry City Football Club, Rugby, CV8, failed to pay £8180.25 to 194 workers.

Employers ‘named and shamed’ for paying less than minimum wage

The 191 named companies failed to pay £2.1 million to over 34,000 workers.
www.gov.uk

The employers named today previously underpaid workers in the following ways:

  • 47% wrongly deducted pay from workers’ wages, including for uniform and expenses
  • 30% failed to pay workers for all the time they had worked, such as when they worked overtime
  • 19% paid the incorrect apprenticeship rate

  • Employers who pay workers less than the minimum wage have to pay back arrears of wages to the worker at current minimum wage rates. They also face hefty financial penalties of up to 200% of arrears - capped at £20,000 per worker - which are paid to the government. Since 2015 the government has ordered employers to repay over £100 million to 1 million workers.

This isn’t a good look for the club, 194 workers? Also this relates to 2011-2018

Yup. Not under Boddy regime. Fingers pointing at Fisher here.

Workers have to be repaid and their is a penalty fine per worker to pay.

Boddy was at the club in 2017, of course we aren’t privy to the dates of the events

It must be. John Lewis having a shocker here. Such a strong home brand not paying minimum wage? Didn’t see that coming.

  • John Lewis plc, Westminster, SW1E, failed to pay £941355.67 to 19392 workers

Yes no dates. Quite a broad range. But we know the club was run like shit for a long time.

Pret, McColls and Welcome Break in minimum wage fail

Retailers and 190 other businesses broke the law by underpaying workers, the government says.

£3.2m fine

So it's a total of 42 pounds per worker? Possibly up to 10 years ago.
Appreciate if that's in one week it might impact people but otherwise seems like a mountain out of a molehill.
Understand the concept of name and shame but a sense of proportion needed.
Now produce a monthly list of the biggest tax Dodgers then we'll see some real money.

Well it is. We’re listed with a host of other clubs like Sheffield United, Oldham, Crewe, Charlton and Portsmouth. Also there are some big brand names on the list.

You can’t not pay minimum wage to staff.

Even then, as an average, that’s £48/worker. Otium is £42/worker. Obviously, no excuses, these are companies with employees and need to pay up. But then I looked at Worcester cricket club and it was £25000 to 2 workers! That’s £12500 each… not exactly pocket money.

Saving grace is it seems we’ve paid up and paid the fine. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen again.

Jeremy Corbyn did. But got pilloried hounded by the press and by the country.

As for ccfc, let’s just say SISU, Fisher & Sepalla let’s not act surprised.

Good PR by the club to explain it quickly
We all know that stories in the media often leave out important facts for the sake of a headline

“Oh I didn’t know if you ask your workers to turn up to work you have to pay them”

Not a great look. Paying people for their labour is kinda step one of being an employer.

I've seen induction sessions not paid before in the hospitality sector. Not that it's right but it does happen.

They should be pulled up too. If you tell someone they have to be somewhere for their job you need to pay them. Some of the shit employers get away with is an absolute joke.

Agreed. The club are a lot more transparent and engaging with supporters than a few years ago. Previously we would have just had a photograph of the corner flag on the CCFC website with no further statement to make.
As much as I would love this to be a SISU conspiracy, business and admin errors do happen and I don’t honestly think that Fisher/Seppala would get involved with stewarding inductions.

Depends could be classed as an interview...an interview is a form of initial induction on some jobs? Some pay for your interview, travel costs and expenses, how far do you go?
Relocation assistance? Lol

Dont start me on “trial shifts”. A half day interview process max. You need longer than that to pick an employee you shouldn’t be in business.

I used to have to go in 2 hours early twice a week for production meetings and would spend half an hour handing over at the end of shift while working as a shift manager, but as I was on salary pay you got no overtime.

Whole hoo haa about nothing. Some need any excuse to have any ammunition to dig at.

Was at the oval the other day, most stewards were students watching the game hand in pockets or on their phone. Jeez.

Nowadays you have an interview to see if you can have an interview usually held by some pip squeak yogurt knitter who has just acquired hairs on their genitals.

Shit thing for them to do but glad they've already sorted it and been open and honest about the reasons.

Should be open and shut but I'm predicting 7 pages
