City boss on his midfielders

Coventry City manager Aidy Boothroyd has described not being able play his captain Lee Carsley as a big loss.

The midfielder has been out after having hernia and Achillies Tendon operations and the City boss told the CT: "Lee has been a big miss for me.

"He's me on the pitch - he settles people down and tells them what to do. He's the sort of player who when everything is going mad he gets his calm head on and sees the game out and generally speaking when he's in the side we pick up a lot more points than when he isn't.

"But his injuries have meant that Aron Gunnarsson has moved inside and apart from Bristol City - which I think was his worst game this season, he's been terrific playing out of his skin.

"Sammy Clingan is back in the side and although he was a bit rusty against Bristol, which you'd expect after that long out of the side, he was right back on it against Doncaster.

"He's shown this season that he's not just the Fancy Dan player who stands in the middle of the pitch and sprays the ball around. He's proved he can be athletic, he can get to the second ball and in my opinion, he's a better all-round player."

Carsley gave us that bite in the middle where he would go in hard and nip at people's ankles and with him and Turner we were bullying teams at the start of the season.

Agree, another of our main players missing during this slump. Although I didn't rate Wright as a decent RB for us, he was like Carsley is now, our brain on the pitch, I think it really shows that we're missing that experienced head out there on the pitch.

I repeat, the problem is the funding and therefore lack of depth and quality replacements. You can't write a season off because of a couple of injuries....well we can

I think Carsleys ball skills were awful when he played though. It was the fire in the belly I liked!

Carsely added stability in the midfield which were severely lacking currently. However, he doesn't possess much skill and his shots were off target 99% of the time.
