I have heard we are set to take Carlos Hernandez a Costa Rican Attacking midfielder, who has just been released from Wellington Phoenix, on trial after the world cup, if he does get into the final 23 man squad.

work permit is 75% of first team games for the national team in the last 2 years not including friendlies, While it looks like he was an important player for the national team that was 8-10 years ago and while he is in the provisional 32 man squad for the world cup I don't think he has played many if any non friendly games for them over the last couple of years but it's not very easy to tell so I could be wrong. I suppose if he made the squad and played 3 games at the world cup he'd probably get a work permit on appeal, but if that happens he probably wouldnt be coming to coventry.

Isn't there also a rule of the ranking of the national team? Didn't Barnsley have a Brazilian midfielder and a couple of Argentinians who had never played for the first team not so long ago? And how did Man U get the de silva twins and anderson? There must be loop holes which is why the FA moaned about it the other week.

And why did we bother taking that Bruno Cazarine on trial last season, he's never represented Brazil at any level?

Think he will play just behind kris Boyd who was coming to see sp last week...................

why would we take someone on trial only if he gets into the world cup squad ?

Yes there is a rule about the ranking of the national team, they need to be top 70 ranking AND have played 75% of games for the national team in the last 2 years. You are right though there certainly are players who don't meet these requirements that get a work permit, normally on appeal. The point of the system though is to make sure those coming in are of such quality that they are improving football in this country, I think Manchester utd and Chelsea are able to demonstrate that on appeal, I don't really see how anyone we would sign fits that criteria.

I don't know the answer to why we took Bruno on trial as he shouldn't be able to get a work permit either. Perhaps since none of the other rules apply to sisu they felt they could get away with this one too but its the home office that makes the final decision on work permits.

For what it's worth, Hernandez was the A-League's player of the year in 2009-10 when he was with the Melbourne Victory. He's got 39 caps & scored 7 goals for Costa Rica. Wellington Phoenix are the club at the end of the world - the only New Zealand team to play in Australia's A-League. Their longest away game is to play the Perth Glory, 3,266 miles one way. Wellington is the capital of NZ & has a pretty good rugby team, the Hurricanes. Here endeth the lesson.

Hernandez is quality but fairly lazy. Terrific vision, great passer of the ball, superb with the dead ball.

Unfortunately his fitness has never quite been up to scratch, and defensively he's a passenger.

I'm not sure how he'd fit in with us, to be honest.
