"Widdrington's role entails identifying and securing suitable player targets - a department that will play a vital role as the club prepares for relegation and adjusting to life in League Two."

The CT seem to think that we are preparing for relegation. :banghead:

After watching today's performance I think a Carl Baker in the side would have added something. Even if it was coming off the bench for the last 20.

Wouldn't have been very difficult for any player coming off the bench to have added something today to be honest.

Something not quite right with this. Their manager wasn't keen to let him go in the summer and was talking him up. Apparently wasn't told he was being left out of the squad completely until an hour before the game.

To be honest if I was a Pompey fan it may feel a bit like it did when Reda started watching Sheffield Wednesday on match days. Baker does seem to have a big affiliation with CCFC, he is always tweeting about us and going to our matches. Even in preseason he was saying how much he would love to come back here.

I would certainly be happy to have him back, but the situation is a little weird...

Doesn't seem weird now. Seems that we want him, he wants to come to us and they need to free up wages. But he could end up going elsewhere.

Would be a good signing. I think this would mean Biamou would be omitted from the match day 18. Only signing I'm worried about in all honesty.

Would he really be a good signing with what we have? Where does he fit into the current team or match day squad?
I cannot seem to find a place for him if everyone's fit.

I think he would fit in in place of Vincenti or maybe Jones, we have creativity on 1 side of the pitch and although Vincenti is grafting he is not by any means a 'winger' he is too slow, I still think he is playing out of position and could maybe be more effective in central midfield, Baker is capable of providing chances for others and I also think it was a massive mistake to make him captain last time he was here, I think he was guilty of over trying although if memory serves me right he is prone to giving the ball away and costing us at times...frustrating player and is it enough to say he loves our club...why would he???

My thinking too, Vincenti or Jones, but it also has me thinking that perhaps the only reason Baker would be coming back is because someone is on the way out. Jones perhaps? Still just over a week left of the transfer window.

Just guessing here, but with Vincenti, Andreu and Jones already here, Baker is an extra addition it doesn't look like we need at the moment.

Vincenti isn't blessed with pace but has been a winger for years, tho predominantly on the right not the left. Bakers is going to add no additional pace to what Vincenti has.

With FFP rules (SCMP) I don't see how we can afford to take him on tho obviously he'd be working to our terms and not in a position to ask for a "nice" contract. Would need a big player to leave to fee us enough wages to take him and replace the player who leaves.

I'd say so. We don't don't have many 'out and out' wingers; Vincenti, Nazon (isnt he a CAM/ST?) and Andreu are typically more central players who can play out wide. But, more importantly, he adds experience to the squad - he was promoted last season - and we know he'll chip in with about 10 goals a season!

This point is of lesser importance, but, he genuinely likes the club, you just know he'll give it 100%.

Could be Kwayme Thomas?, can't see him making the match day squad unless we have lots of injuries

Don't get me wrong I like baker, I'd take his set piece abilities but at 34 is he really the right answer to fill a wide role?

To me he'd now suit a more central role and we've players already here to fill them roles, so I struggle to see how we can accommodate him.

If wages become available other areas need working on more

If he was good enough for Pompey last season, he's good enough for me. I'm not that fussed whether we sign him or not, but I think he'd be a good addition to the squad if he's available.

I don't think we could afford to pay a transfer fee for Baker, but maybe we could get him on loan?

If we're going back for old players I'd prefer Moussa over Baker.
