Best of both worlds with Grimes to me. Always looking for the ball and very rarely loses it. But then you get it where he plays a 30 yard pass perfectly to unlock a defence.

Hoping it’s my memory playing tricks on me, but I can’t remember a single instance he did this…

Not to defend him too much but last season Grimes had the second highest progressive passes in Europe.

If you can’t see what Grimes brings to our midfield then try another sport as football isn’t for you ….

He completely dictates the tempo of the game, exactly like he did at Swansea when he used to boss us every damn time.

it is like some people don't get how you play through a press

I don’t really get the issue people have with him picking it up deep tbh. He starts the attack way better than your average centre back does and when he moves into that position it allows the full backs to push on.
Also he actually managed to get a couple of goals in half a season which is something of a goal spree by Grimes standards. No midfielder will go without goals playing under Lampard.

We rarely played over the top or quickly to release our forwards last season. Lots of working it out to the wings and crossing in, few big switches or raking diagonals. I honestly can’t remember Grimes playing any passes like that or like his highlight reel on here when he signed that put a winger away.

Putting a winger through? Not just switching play to the other side?

And always when unexpected. I suppose the opposition just expected him trying to keep possession.

Maybe I’m not explaining myself well. The sort of passes you see in the first few here:

We then did it against Sunderland at home who sat back and let us pass it around the back doing sweet FA

Considering it took a while to get going, being messed about and then also had his season cut short its pretty impressive.

Must be some kind of misunderstanding between us here as it shows countless times the type of balls forward to the wingers I said.

And yet when teams decided to sit in against us he ended up the deepest outfield player on the pitch. A lot of the passes he played were simple - strange considering when he came on vs Leeds in his debut his one-touch play was exquisite.

Now, it may be as simple as the players in front of him not being in the shape that we’d been working on, forcing him to hold onto the ball for longer. Clearly he has the ability to do it, but I genuinely don’t remember many/any defence splitting passes.

Yeah maybe I’m just not seeing it but I rarely remember our wingers getting set free or against the last man like that even less so our strikers.

This site is so funny. Arguing about Grimes on a transfer thread about a loan goal keeper.

Grimes turned our season around quite obviously

No one said grimes wasn’t a good signing or even that I wasn’t happy we signed him. I just said defensive midfielders ranked lowest in my totally made up personal rankings of how exciting signings were.

Doug King help me please. Make a signing.

Less exciting than Centre backs and goalkeepers?

I'd get out my seat if our (potential) new keeper ends up 1v1 against the opposing goalie yeah

Pull off good saves and are a bit mental tho. We probably talked about goalkeepers more than any other position this year.

Conversely I love MvE, probably my favourite player at the moment, but I don’t get excited by the idea of us getting a left sided MvE as I do some random 19 year old winger.

Other people are welcome to their own scale.

You are getting carried away!
Birmingham are "going for it"
We have signed an unknown fullback, a fullback who isn't as good as the one we have, and are linked to a loan keeper.
That is not "going for it"
