so Ricketts has retained the captains armband.

For a player who's likely to be a bit part player I think this is a poor allotment by TM.

Yeah it is a bit of a strange one.

Would think it would be somebody like Vincelot who will be playing week in / week out.

Not so much poor as strange I would say.

Very odd unless he is playing every week and TM has already alluded to the fact that he played too often last season.

Weird.

Captain, leader, legend he ain't. I understand it's good business to retain a very experienced versatile defender but to keep on as captain. I don't understand that. Unless our new natural leader is still to sign

A captain really isn't that important in football.

Depends who it is.

Makes a difference if it is (was) John Terry. Depends on the character. Think a captain can make an immense impact dependant upon who it is.

odd, but not surprising.

Have they announced vice captain, as Tudgay might be in the frame ?

If it doesn't matter I would give it to Conor Thomas.

dont agree.

They show lead by example, motivate, support and drive the team on.

Can players without an armband not do that then?

it seems fashionable to have a club captain and then another captain in actual games, could be that kind of set up.

I don't know why we don't have the same setup as the continent whereby the players vote for the captain, after all it's the captain who takes players concerns to the manager. If the captain is unpopular then players concerns are less likely to air and a dressing room fracture is more likely.

I think Mogga said Ricketts would be club captain and being captain on the pitch will depend on whether or not he deserves to be in the starting XI, which id be surprised to see him in over 50% of the time. Hopefully Vincelot will get it more often than not.

But I bet he'll join the former players and appear in legends games in years to come

If Jorgensen can do it, so can Ricketts

And with him being almost ever present last season, and by their own admission over used? I think he has dirt on Mowbray

Played awful for the most last year, shouldn't really be near the team let alone the Captains armband.

Big exaggeration there. He was poor in a minority of games, but generally did OK considering he played in every position across the back 4.

He played badly in all the televised games and had a few other bad ones towards the end of the season but generally he was pretty solid. I feel the people saying how bad he is probably didnt see more than 50% of the games last season. Also is he not the "club captain" which is a slightly different role to team captain.

Also unlike Cole he wasn't given the luxury of putting his feet up every other week. In some games he was clearly feeling the impact of playing every week (twice sometimes) and should have been rescued.

Still let's indulge in more hyperbole how crap he is.

A manager can only do so much on the sidelines.

You need a leader who is playing week-in week-out.

Strange decision by TM.

Ricketts must be the dominant centre half Mowbray keeps referring to

I don't think naming another clubs player as our capt would be accepted.

I agree, that's why I was suggesting him as vice captain.

I thought Ricketts started the season very well but faded along with most of the squad, so I can't really single him out for criticism too much. I'm a little like Hadji10 with regards captaincy, I've always thought just let whoever's either the most senior or the most photogenic wear the armband in any particular game. Although I get the idea of what a captain ought to represent and provide, it seems a bit of a sideshow at times, thinking of the national team in particular.

With squad as is currently and assuming we play 3-4-3 see him starting as one of the three central defenders more often than not. Probably rickets, Willis and stokes as 3 as things stand, hopefully we will get a few more in having said that between now and start of season.
