Haven't slept in days, I'm dead on my feet but my mind is racing, heart is pounding. Need some sleeping tablets. Went out for a walk about 3AM and bumped into a bit of excitement with the police just having caught someone, stopped for a chat for about 20 mins. I think I was boring them with my idle chit chat but they were pleasant enough and let me ramble on. They even offered to give me a lift home.

Dreading another 24hrs of being wide awake. It's amazing what stress can do to you.

Have a big holiday or try and get something prescribed from the doctors.

Had a similar issue myself but won't hijack this thread!

I use a Paul McKenna sleep like a log track on my iPod - lasts 26 mins - I generally make about 10 mins before I nod off

Pretty much the same, session at the gym and then when the buzz wears off collapse to sleep.

You can get 'Nytol' type tablets from boots/chemist without a prescription. They are (I assume) not quite as strong as prescribed tablets, but if you are not used to medication, they would likely do the trick. Often you find after one or two good nights sleep, your body will get back into the habit of sleeping naturally again.

I certainly would avoid using pills/tablets as a long term plan, and get back into natural sleep as soon as possible. It also goes without saying that caffeine and alcohol have a huge negative effect on quality and quantity of sleep.

As said above, getting some exercise during the day will help. But don't push too hard, your body will already be under a bit of strain with the current lack of sleep, so don't go running a marathon or anything. A brisk long walk or jog a couple of times a day would help.

Try to stick to your natural bedtime, i.e if you usually go to sleep at 10pm then stick to that. Trying to force yourself to sleep at 7pm because you're so tired rarely works.

A good session of window cleaning in the fresh air, sets you up for a good night's kip. Or my son would recommend a spliff just before bed no doubt !

Had similar thing last month, work related. Stressed over the weekend, but confronted the problem on Monday. Slept like a baby Monday night.

Pills and help tapes won't solve whatever's causing the stress. Sort those issues out if you can, or share them with family/friends, you'll probably get some kip.

It sounds like you need something strong that will temporarily help, like anxiety medication or whatever. I can't see a bit of meditation or a cup of green tea helping.

I don't know what's causing your issues but going days without sleep sounds serious and a trip to a doctor couldn't do any harm, if you haven't done so already of course.

As has been mentioned already try meditation (I tried mindfulness - there’s something called body scan which you can find online, if not PM me). Also CBD oil might be worth considering (obviously consider any risks, consult doc etc etc)

Would avoid taking sleeping tablets regularly

Based on Marty's posts over the past few months, I think if he hasn't got help from a doctor, he needs to get it, for his own sake. Professional advice beyond tablets would probably be helpful, too.

Marty, if you have already been to the doctor, then I would go back. They need to give you all the support they can. You need to take care of yourself, and you need to be given the help and support to be able to do that effectively again.

Yeah, taking the first step and reaching out for help is probably the hardest but ultimately best thing someone with mental health issues can do.

There's a Scottish comedian called Limmy who openly talks about his struggles with mental health and how he deals with it. I found it very helpful as I had a bout of anxiety in the past year and hearing that so many other normal people feel the same is somewhat of a relief.

Mental health talk starts at 12mins.

Download Headspace - its a Mind app, really helps my Mrs relax and get to sleep - she struggles with anxiety
Think there is a free trial - its a very well recognised app and recommended by Anxiety UK, not just another developer app trying to make some cash

Worth a go

I’m paying £10 a month for headspace and Spotify. Works a treat after a night shift when I’m struggling to sleep during the day.

In all seriousness, go talk to someone. Private CBT therapy is my top tip if you can afford it. Otherwise call IAPT, you don’t need a referral.

I can sympathise and have had gone days without sleeping before due to stress, it’s dreadful. Even in general I have problems sleeping and don’t get more than 5 or 6 hours of poor quality sleep.

You’re better off avoiding Nytol and the like and should go to the doctor and see what they say. I’d be surprised if they don’t give you a short term dose of something to help sort the insomnia out, it sounds extreme.

Meditate. Plz give it a real try

If it’s stress related then you should try to address what’s stressing you out and limit it’s impact on you if possible.
Also, I’d suggest quick bursts of intense physical exercise to clear your head.

To be honest I hardly use the app but been meaning to get back into, after doing it for 10minutes it is like being high :D
is anyone subscribing to Headspace, or just free trial (I'm currently doing trial and wondering whether or not to take the plunge and start paying)

I’ve been struggling to sleep for the last 2 weeks , I drop off ok but wake up after 15/20 minutes and takes a good 3/4 hours to get back to sleep
