All these people who now go to Wasps, at least the Coventry contingent, if they wanted to watch rugby, had they gone to Cov, they would have given the City’s own rugby club a fighting chance of reaching the top flight. Imagine what Cov could have achieved if they were watched by 6k or 7k each home game.

Yeah well if clubs like Wasps have their way clubs like Cov will never get that shot.

I was there too! Terry Thomas in goal with baggy shorts (may have even been plus fours) and a fishermans landing net.
I'm pretty certain it was on the Sunday following our previous days 3-1 triumph (Alan Green hat trick) over Wolves that sealed their relegation.
My, how times have changed - No more manic Saturday morning kids TV.

I might be being a bit thick here. But was the butts a stadium before Cov moved there? That wasn’t too along ago, right. Late 90’s. but the tiswas thing sounds like it was 70’s/80’s.

The butts used to be the home of Coventry Godiva Harriers, had cycle track, running track, long jump pits, grass pitch in the centre also further towards Albany road entrance were tennis courts and bowling greens. There was also some kind of athletics meeting there with a few stars of the day in the 80s if i recall when running events changed from yards to metres the butts running track was a odd size lap so at that event i think somebody set a world record for running the fastest and only 452m race something like that anyway. Most Sunday League cup finals were played there entrance was free there was usually two finals on the same sunday but you would get splitters sitting in the stand of the benches. I played in a couple of finals there myself won one lost one, was also our training pitch being local to the Broomfield Tavern.

I played in a couple of cup finals there in the '60s. Won one 6-3, lost one 2-1.

Next year will be Cov’s 150th. Is it even mentioned in the City of Culture?

Not quite. That'll be 2024.
I was at Coundon Road during the Centenary season 1974 (and we won the cupfor the second time that year), and at the BPA for the 125th.
I sincerely hope I'm still around for the 150th and the cuckoos have fcked off by then.
Dreams.
