There you go then...if he'd of come and dropped it they might not have scored

The goal was the result of not marking a short corner giving time/space for cross. Angle of cross not good for keeper to come for. I respected ricketts for accepting responsibility. A player who is big enough to hold his hands up.

wer'e 2nd in the league...give it a rest...fleck gave the ball away , reda tried to go past players and gave it away. O brien didn't have a great game...what if he hadn't come for those crosses and a burton player got on the end of it...the teams fine as it is...enjoy it

He's an almost 23 year old professional footballer - you said he's still learning, I say he's not showing much evidence of that. How long should a team challenging for promotion keep patience with a goalkeeper still learning to catch crosses? It's not a witch hunt, I agree with you on your criticisms of the other 3 players but they all have other aspects of their game that either outweighs those mistakes at this level, or diminishes them. You don't get that luxury as a goalkeeper.

Made a great save near the end but dropped the ball 3 times today especially when under pressure. That is worrying. It's confidence with burge.

I know it's a bit of a weird call but what happened to Jamie jones? We had him on loan last year for one month and looked very competent. Caught the ball and everything.

He can't be any worse than burge and a cheapish wage. We cannot continue with burge in goal if we can be serious about top 6.

I have previously stuck up for burge but today I have been proved wrong. Nice lad but needs to be turfed out and Reice-cook must be thinking what has he got to do.

He made a very routine save. It wasn't even good - as the commentator said - routine but one for the cameras.

4th choice keeper at Preston now, weren't a massive fan of his but he's definitely solid and a upgrade on Burge. Would be pretty easy to get on a permanent in January as well you would think.

I said before season started Mowbray would give Burgess his chance. I also said picking up good keepers on loan is easier than other positions. Once Premireship teams and Championship teams settle Mowbray will bring in a good keeper on loan.

By the way Burge hasn't cost us any points this season. That is not an apology to anyone.

The signs are all there though, Hobo.

He keeps on dropping the ball like he did today, we are going to be letting in goals as a result. It's an accident waiting to happen and just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it's not going to happen, because it plainly looks like it's most certainly going to.

It's not just the dropsy, it's the effect on the confidence of the whole back four. As someone else points out too, managers of other teams will encourage a high bombardment of the penalty area now. At times today he would have been better off punching it !

Can't weigh him up to be honest. For a guy who doesn't really command his box, he's suddenly trying to impose himself by catching everything? IF he's been given orders to be more positive, I'd suggest he just tries to punch everything out -less chance of us and the defense shitting ourselves.

Still a keeper and a RB short of a top end team in this division IMO. I like Burge, he's one of ours, but we need to be able to take him out of the firing line. Not convinced by Cook either. I'd like to see a permanent GK come in and a RB on loan. Then I'd be happy with the squad for the season (assuming we can keep hold of Armstrong).

I've defended Burge in the past but that was horrific today. I have no idea how none of their players scored. Burge should be dropped.

Yup, I have to say unless we go permanent, it seems a bit self-defeating replacing Burge.

After all, whenever a loanee goes back, Burge'd then have to play, but without having gained any experience (see last season. Arguably he'd have been better served playing the first half of the season when there was relatively less pressure, then be dumped in the relegation battle). A keeper's a very public role, so mistakes are magnified and sure, he may go the way of Shearer, but at the same time I'm remembering that Turner was full of mistakes when young. He needed the games to toughen up to become a decent centre back however. If Mowbray thinks Burge has a long-term future he should play him - if he doesn't, he shouldn't.

It's that simple.

Frankly that's an absurd argument. He's a poor goalkeeper. May be ok with you for some odd reason but it defies logic.

It doesn't defy logic.

He has not made mistakes this year that have cost us points.

He's who we've got, that's the logic!

Do you really think Mowbray would leave him in if he shared your concerns?

I wouldn't drop him. He had a poor game and flapped at a few crosses but it didn't cost us in the end and dropping him would be a bad move in the long run.

If we had already been rotating keepers then yes. But we haven't and dropping him is a massive call and would show no confidence in him.

Are you having a laugh ? He dropped every all ball which he should have collected easily. Get rid and bring in a proper keeper !

Its not so absurd.
If we had striker that scored a winning goal every game thus far but also misses 3 or 4 other chances because of a cock-up. Would people shout for him to be dropped?

I've defended Burge all season, but today he was poor. 2 of his drops could very easily have resulted in goals if a striker was near him. The fact that he tried (before stopping) to come out and get a ball in the 94th minute that ended up being headed away from the edge of the box worried me. Looks like his judgement on high balls is completely off.

It does because we are not gaining points because of him but in spite of him.

Trying to compare to strikers who miss chances but also score the odd vital goal is equally illogical as Burge has certainly not won any points this season.

The fact is if the club want promotion the task will be very hard with an inadequate keeper.

All we hear is he is young, he's progressing, he will get better. Why? He doesn't even have the basic foundations and skill set to be a decent keeper.

It's clear the management are hoping the defence will function in spite of his inadequaces. It's a risk. It still doesn't alter the fact he is a sub-standard player and an obvious weak link in the team.

I seem to believe we started last season pretty well and yet that keeper was under fire from day one. He never gave such an inept display as we witnessed today.

He hasn't, but he has stopped some shots that could've proven to be winners against us.
I was using this as a counter argument. A striker misses chances but doesn't cost us the game would not be considered to be dropped. Why should a keeper for doing his own job to a similar standard?
He needs to improve & I doubt he won't be getting help from TM & all that can help. It will reach a point where he needs to improve or he will be dropped or shipped out.
For now he has just looked less than commanding at times in his box.

Was working till midnight and had the match recorded. Managed to ignore the temptation to check the score but hot a message from my brother in law, who is a Man Utd fan saying "That goalie of your is going to cost you's points this season."

So I just assumed we'd lost and Burge had f***ed up. Just finished watching the match. Delighted we actually won but he was awful with the high ball today.

His command of the area is poor.
His catching of the ball is diabolical.
His distribution of the ball is poor.
His shot stopping is good. But it isn't good enough to make up for everything else.

You will find better than him on a Sunday morning in the local park. I am still better than he is. And I would have retired years ago. But I can still make the same saves he does. I organise my defence. And I can catch the ball. I can throw the ball into the other half straight to the player I want and kick to the other goal. So I expect more from a player that gets paid for playing.

For those that are defending him. Have you ever said against a defender that keeps losing the ball or has bad distribution? Or against a midfielder that can only do half the job he is supposed to do? Or said that a striker that scores the occasional goal but keeps missing sitters is good enough?

You should expect a GK to be at the top of his game by the time he is 25. Burge is nearly that age. He may be ours. But he won't suddenly vastly improve. Do we wait until he costs us lots of points? Hopefully TM has something in place and has been waiting to see if he improves or to see if he has any money to sign a replacement.

Nothing wrong with his distribution this game. Absolutely agree about his catching and box control.

Are these things you learn with experience?

Where I absolutely agree with Grendel is that he will cost us goals and possibly points.

My personal priorities for league 1 would be solid captain/defender, keeper, striker, playmaker.

If I was Geoff foster my question would be are there any areas still to strengthen?

Mowbray must feel the 10 goals or 6-7 points are ok to lose

He has had 23 years to learn how to catch a ball. How much more time will he need? Maybe he only has small hands. The bigger your hands the easier it is to catch a football.

He is dead now IIRC but will still catch a ball as good as Burge.
