What the language used by CCFC chairman Tim Fisher tells us

Coventry City chairman Tim Fisher has been praised as “brave” and “skilled” for the way he interacted with supporters during a recent question and answer session.

Mr Fisher met with fans during a meeting of The Sky Blue Trust this week and faced a flurry of questions around the off the field issues at the club during an event which often saw supporters’ frustration and anger reflected in their questioning style.

But after viewing footage of the event, Dr Kieran File, assistant professor in the Centre for Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick, says Mr Fisher handled the situation well.

The expert in professional communication, focusing on the world of professional sport and the ways people communicate, also gave us an indication of the deeper meanings behind some of the phrases and conversational style employed by the CCFC chairman.
On Tim Fisher’s general performance

Dr File said: “Mr Fisher is brave and quite skilled in handling this interaction.

“There is some behaviour typical of accountability interviews we see with politicians. This raises some interesting questions about the world of professional football.

“It’s certainly evidence that boards are increasingly seen by fans as, in-part, accountable for the successes of a football club.”

Deflection

Dr File said: “Mr Fisher answers some questions and deflects others in this footage.

“In some instances, he uses a deflection technique, often used by politicians, to answer a question with another question directed back at the interviewer.

“This temporarily puts the question-asker on the spot and draws attention to their credibility in making a given statement or asserting a particular claim in a question.”

Dr file wouldn't have that opinion if the audience had brain cells and had the intelligence to listen to his (Fisher) response back then ask him the question again politely until he gave an appropriate reply to the question.

The forum was embarrassing.

The skill was to refuse to answer genuine questions and ignore the meatheads

Any good question was just ignored

There's no doubting that he's good at what he does (his responses 11 times out of 10 piss people off). Probably why he's still in employment

Wonder what the professor would have made of him had fisher faced an hour of probing and persistent questioning where that deflection was challenged.

There was a reason fisher wanted the format .... It made it easier for him to control it. The guy is used to public speaking and he is good at what he does. A series of fans statements or rants is not hard for him to deflect.

Surprised the professor didn't pick up on fisher deliberately making comments or actions that raised the temperature in the room. Making deflection so much easier

Honestly this is a massive waste of everyone's time. There was tremendous passion in that crowd but bar one or two they were only interested in getting things off their chest. The Sky Blue Trust needs to harness that passion in a way that benefits the club rather than having these things descend into a Sky Blues anonymous sessions for a group of Middle Aged men with an evening free and a bug to bear.

Tim Fisher is a politician who responded with reason to most of the questions asked. If we want to match him (which I assume we do if we want to take him on) we need to professionalise our approach ourselves and treat these sessions as opportunities to acquire intelligence so we can work together for the benefit of the club in the mean time. While everyone is at odds with each other there is no way we will turn this around.
