Formal thread as I haven't seen one. Contrary to a lot of posters I would like to see this happen. Very good on his day with bags of pace and a great bloke personality wise. Worked his way up the divisions shows character and a proper mentality we like to see in our players. Really want this guy in and before preseason hopefully.

I think he might be a decent signing but my opinion is only based on a few stats and what he did to us last season, I wonder how much weighting people will put on that, I always feel like I remember players more if they scored a decent goal against us

Why?

He will undoubtedly cost millions and Simms is both younger and better.

I would much rather us sign either another younger prospect to back Simms up or an experienced striker to mentor him.

He's a perfect fit , enough experience without being over the hill and still has room to improve.
Get it done

If this is the season we go for it we need competition for places not prospects , especially in forward areas where we tailed off last season

How much is he going to cost though?

If I was WBA I'd be asking for 5m. That would be a massive waste of money for us to spend on a second choice striker.

Just slightly concerned that we tend to operate with a slightly smaller squad. Can we afford to lose a player for over a month, if he gets selected to go to the AFCON during what is notoriously a busy period.

Good player, would love him here. Our forward options would be so so good.

He's a decent age tbf, 25 and a four year contract and if he does alright with us, he's still have the same value he joined us for minimum. Ideally we sign a younger development striker as well!

My only concern would be if signing him left us weaker than we had to be elsewhere on the pitch. If that's not the case then go for it.

And yeah, transfer fee is obviously key, but then it always is.

Fortunately thats in January and I would say we would likely get a loan signing in to cover him.

Anything around the £2m mark is an absolute bargain.

Not for me but that’s just a personal opinion. I understand why some posters and fans would want him. He doesn’t offer enough for me. Obviously cost comes in to it. Maybe at 2m it isn’t a bad deal but at 4/5m it’s a deffo no from me.

He is an upgrade on godden and played for a good team for 2 years. Begs the question why West Brom would sell to a rival.

Surely he would be third choice, as if Simms was injured we'd move Wright across and bring in Mason-Clarke.

I tend to agree that the money would be better spent elsewhere, unless of course this means we are selling someone.

Would be a fantastic signing if we can do it. You need plenty of goals to get out of the Champ so it’s ridiculous to say “Simms is better” etc. We need depth. No good just having a stellar starting 11.

Don't understand the obsession with what 'choice' someone is tbf. Options are a good thing and a lot of our forward players can play multiple positions across the forward line.

Seems some on here complain we need more depth and better quality then, when we can actually improve with an 11 goal striker, moan it's too much money or he isnt good enough.

Bonkers isn't it. We want a squad where no one who plays on the match day would be a significant downgrade. That's going to cost you a bit of money at times.

You'd hope any new signing would be targeting becoming first choice anyway.

Also funny reading this after what many were saying about Simms early last season. There was a large amount that wanted to keep Godden lumbering around in the starting 11.

Exactly what i said the other day. Some players go to clubs knowing they'll be backups i'm sure, but i don't think thats where we're at right now. We'll want people who fancy their chances of getting in the team regularly.

How much is he improving us though? 11 goals for a pretty good West Brom isn't exactly tearing up trees and it's not like he'll be coming on the cheap.

If we want to splash the cash I think we can do better.

would likely cost 2-3 million due to being out of contract end of this season, its a no brainer, he’s exactly the sort of striker we need, played at this level, runs around a lot, presses backlines, can play on the wings, quick, strong I dont see the issue? He’s only backup to Simms we’re not gonna get another 20 goal a season striker because we already have Haji and Simms who pretty much are

2 less goals than simms for us in less games. He has a year left on his contract so won't be anywhere near the value you seem to think he would be. We are upgrading on godden clearly. I really don't see your point

West Brom don't exactly play an expansive game but they are a very functional unit. In his 2 seasons in the Championship he's finished as their top scorer on both occasions. Also he'll offer more than just goals and something a bit different.

He's scored 18 in 2 seasons, not impressive at all. Spending millions on a bang average championship player would be a mistake.

People seem to forget where we were a few seasons ago, £2-3m would have been our biggest signing in 20 years and now we're happy to blow that on this guy?

He's unlikely to appreciate in value as he's already 25 and will struggle to consistently start over Simms.

Do not see why anyone wants him. It would be so underwhelming.

Need up front options,
No matter who it is! One thing we seriously lack is good competition for places and to keep players on their toes and performing well, is knowing that if you have a dip in form, someone can step in. Simple.

Think we need to get out of the mentality of him coming in to be “backup” we’re not that type of team now, he’s adding depth, I’m sure he will get plenty of game time alongside Simms and Haji.

Quick, direct, strong and likes the ball in behind. Give him some time with Adi at Ryton, similarly to Simms when he first arrived, and no doubt we'll have a player. Again, not sure where all the negativity comes from. He has the raw attributes, give players (if he does sign) time. Been touted by us for a reason.

A bang average player who was top scorer for a team that finished higher than us?
I can see you've made your mind up but you're talking nonsense. He'd be a good signing for us.

I can’t see us going for him as WBA will charge a premium. It doesn’t feel like our market to pay money for other Championship players. Will be over inflated.

I don't agree with the backup label but it is still a good question. Our fans are turning into spoilt brats.

I would still like us to make a move for Sinclair Armstrong at QPR, young, strong, pacy and the right kind of player I think MR and AV could improve and get the best out of

a bit like BTA but more raw I’d argue
