I am a bit baffled why Brandon Mason isn't given more game time. I can understand that last season Sam McCallum was a revelation, but whenever Mason needed to step in he did a good job.
Whenever I have seen him play he looks a tidy player who gives his all. He's quick with good control and is still only young.
He also seems to be supportive of his team-mates.

He's not got the attacking ability to be a top notch lwb.

If we switch to a back 4 at anytime this season he's back in the team.

I hope he has a part to play this year. Lost his way after the Rotherham debacle but I don’t recall him ever letting the side down and was always pretty solid, that game aside. I imagine he will play 2nd fiddle to Giles next season.

funny how perception can change within 12 months. The club were quick to tie him down to a 3 year contract last Summer if I remember correctly.

Is a very strange one, was one of our better players before the switch of system. They must fancy him at wingback but odd they gave him a new contract if he doesn't fit the system

He was excellent at the start of last season. Will go to have a good career somewhere as a LB in a back 4.

I like him! Decent player and didn’t do a fat lot wrong to drop out the side last season, just no one expected McCallum to develop as well as he did

Fun fact, Also the only current member of the squad to play in a Premier League game

In the pre season games Giles defensive qualities have questioned but obviously very good attacking. Mason isn’t as good as Giles in the attack but is a better defender.

Have to disagree. For his age, McCallum was a physical force defensively.

I don't recall him losing an aerial battle last season, which for Lge 1 is extremely impressive.

People bang on about Walsh, but Sam will be sorely missed this season.

I actually think Giles is a much better option being played up higher but let’s see if another LB LWB comes.

For some experience and ability to play both full back positions would Chris Gunter be worth a punt, currently unattached but in the Wales squad

Agree with the areial aspect of his game - McCallum had a real leap, good timing when it came to challenging in the air.

As mentioned he was great at the start of last season. At Fratton Park he was superb, best player on the pitch and ran himself into the ground.

Giles appears to be better going forwards but Mason stronger defensively.

I can see Giles being first choice but I'd fancy Mason to still get a bit of game time.

Maybe against the stronger teams with a decent right winger Mason will get more of a go this season in a back 5 (even if he’s not quite as good going forward). Think he’s a good LB, decent enough LWB and still young enough to improve

Good squad player, gives us an option, and cover, and probably not on big money.
Given our budget, he's worth his place in the squad.

His first season thought he was one of our most consistent players. Just seems to work better in the flat four though.

I heard last Season that Mason and Hiwula were asked to play while carrying knocks due to an injury crisis.
Both refused and Robins was furious , since I was told that neither player played. I can only assume that unless he puts in some stellar performances Mason will follow Hiwula when his contract expires .

Mason probably created more with his crossing than Mccallum did (Mccallum's crosses were dreadful) but Mason seemed to lack confidence in going too far forward. I'm not sure why he hasn't pushed or been pushed on this part of his game enough to tie down a starting position.

My worry is Giles defensively I’m sure shrewsbury had the same issue and moved him further forward

I'm not sure that makes sense. He got injured in the Watford game at end of August & was back in the starting XI by mid September. If Robins bore a grudge why would he have gone straight back into the team?
Also, he's under contract until 2022, his new deal was ironically signed during that brief spell out injured which would further dispell the theory.

From the pre-season matches thus far it does seem like Giles is a bit of a weak link defensively but an asset going forward. If our RWB's are out we look very vulnerable down the flanks. Giles reminds me a bit of those brothers that Man U had - Fabio and Rafael. Fergie said they were the best he'd ever seen and going forward they were good but defensively they were terrible. Now at the time at that club you can get away with that to a fair extent. At Cov not so much.

Question with Giles is do we think we'll gain more from his attacking than we'll lose from his defending, or would it be better to have more defensive solidity with Mason but lose the attacking threat?

Personally I think we'll be spending more time on the back foot this year and the defensive qualities will be required more. With two ACM's you could set it up so that they could pull a bit wider on occasion to make up for that lack of attacking intent.

I reckon we'll start with Giles but if he's costing us a few goals after a few matches the change will be made. If not IMO it'd show a bias against Mason given the way in which he lost his place last year.
