Whoever owns Bolton now, add a comedy moustache and that's who he's selling to.

I suspect at least some of those deducted points can be attributed to their missed fixture - literally never heard of a league team simply not turning up for a scheduled game.

The oppo was Brentford who made light of it; after the FL awarded Brentford a notional 1-0 win for the non-played game, the Brentford matchday announcer said over the PA system (at the final game of the season at home to Preston) said "the FL are yet to get around to telling us who our goalscorer was..."

There’s at least one team we shouldn’t have to worry about.

I wonder if they'd same about us if we don't end up playing at the Ricoh next season!

Never like to see a club in that situation, but that’s one less team in the mix we have to worry about. They were one of the teams I thought would be up there but it looks like their season is over before it’s even started.

Probably think it points to a club in chaos/turmoil etc. Perhaps they'd be right, perhaps not.

Apparently not, its just for the administration, EFL yet to decide on sanctions for the unfulfilled game

Awful situation there. We need to support them as much as possible guys. Like with us, past all of the tribal stuff, we are one football community and need to support clubs in turmoil like we’ve been.
Looking forward to visiting the Reebok next season.

It's an absolute disgrace. They'll now struggle for recruitment v to rebuild. When you're already on your arse income wise who will go there when starting on -12? Almost be better to relegate them again and let them rebuild.

Also why did Blackpool not get a deduction? I'm pleased for them they didn't as they don't deserve it, but surely you can't have different rules for different teams.

Middlesbrough in the premier league, Bryan Robson decided that they couldn’t field a first team because of injuries so called the game of. Got deducted points for it and IIRC they went down and would have stayed up had they played the game regardless of result. Although I can’t swear to the last bit as it was so long ago.

But what kind of sanctions would you put in place against a club going into administration if not points deductions? I appreciate that it will affect the fans but there’s limited scope for actions that wouldn’t (directly anyway). With the fact clubs are, by and large, set up as Limited Companies there is no option to get to the owner(s) without affecting the club.

Starting the season on minus points is always going to be difficult to avoid relegation, but we have survived it, not sure if they need a total rebuild of their squad?

Correct. Docked an additional 3 points which did for them. It was 96/97, the year that Sunderland also went down after our late kick off at Spurs.

But that game was eventually rearranged and the restaged fixture did actually take place, unlike the Bolton v Brentford game which was never played at all.

The league does have to penalise teams for going into admin, as by using that process to write off debts you can feasibly gain competitive advantage by signing a squad of players beyond your means. A points deduction creates a disincentive to take the admin route. I think that rule was brought in after Leicester used admin to help themselves out a little too gratuitously. I feel sorry for their fans but not for the owners of a club which hasn't paid its employees. Their owner didn't pay the wages and then blamed the prospective buyer (the dodgy AF ex Watford owner) for the non payment. Truth is that as long as he owns the club, paying the players is his responsibility.

Not following this closely, but is it possible they could be owned by the same owners ?

Probably will.A side issue about the Bolton when the players had not been paid why weren't the P F A stepping forward and at least giving them a loan.Maybe they did but i didn't see any signs of them looking after them.

They went down. Saved us from relegation under Strachan who then built what I think was our best ever team (1997-8) only to then take us down 2 seasons after that.

That was the season of the last hilarious Sunderland documentary; Premier Passions. Worth watching if you need a laugh -

I remember they were interviewing he groundsman prior to one of their last remaining home games in spring 1997 - he was moving a circular pattern onto the grass at Roker Park, proudly telling the interviewer: "We've not lost on grass this season", only for the interviewer to ask "what about Everton at home?", and the groundsman goes "...oh yeah.."

IIRC that's the documentary that did Peter Reid's reputation no favours.

The EFL would have called it a 1-1 draw if Bolton had Burge in the team.
