When back in cov on my most recent trip I visited my old favourite ‘the Albany’ in Earlsdon. Christ! What have they done to it?!
I used to love it in there. back in my day they had pool tables upstairs, if you could see them through thick fog of weed smoke.

Not the original, sadly. Although I have a really old picture (below)

Edit:
(other picture deleted as it was the old Plough INN, not the plough, London Rd)

How about the old British Legion club in Balsall Common Early/mid 70’s ? Fond childhood memories of that place.

Is Billy Lane's fishing shop still open? Used to love spending ages in there just mooching about.

Billy Lane was a mate of my dad, lived in Tomson Avenue Coundon and used the Coachmakers club now and again, a real character. When he was practising for the World championship he used to fish by the first bridge at the canal basin and don’t know how he did but caught decent fish all the time.

I was in the Green Man the last night before closing down. It was turning into a pub for us Cov fans on the way to the Ricoh. Couple in there on to Old Crown on Windmill Road, then the Wheatsheaf. They put Cov shirts up etc in the Green Man then it shut down !

You’d have a long trip (depending where you live), and have to sit in the beer garden and get your drinks from a portable (dunno) serving thing. In Hammersmith. Not the only one either. Madness. Be fucking mayhem.

There are quite a few open in London area - take away booze in disposable plastic glasses and sit outside somewhere
Toilets and other facilities not open
Mostly places off the main drag

It was decent. Had something for everyone. Used to be really busy on Fridays and Saturdays. Where do earlsdon folk go now?
We used to spend our time between there and the cottage.

Question for Houch - did you carry on this hobby to Isle of Wight pubs?
Spent many a childhood to mid teens over there and frequented quite a few.

Edit: only remember a handful particularly well.

Good question Harry. No, I never did, although I was there for 8 years, I never really considered the history of the place. When I first moved there in 2010, there were a good few pubs then, that have since closed down. I could find out if anyone has a local page, as I still follow the island stuff on Facebook. I got banned from just two while I was there. Not bad going for me!

All I can recall about The Plough was that someone walked in one evening, took out a sawn-off shotgun from under his coat and shot one of the customers. It was a gangland style thing. Can't remember if the bloke died or not. I think he did. That was years ago - maybe back in the early 80's?

My mistake on the year. It was 1996. 1996 Plough pub shooting: Jury cannot reach a verdict

They've got to do something to shield the people snorting coke off of the bar!

Hatton Arms is doing it as well.

Or if you just want a draught pint a little closer without the nice views you can always get one in the Longford store:

Longford Store

Shame it's Carlsberg.

Further to my earlier reply, I found a site listing IoW pubs. Not sure how 'historic' they are though? My personal local was the Castle in Newport and the Newport Ale House.
The best pubs on the Isle of Wight

For those that grew up around Tile Hill check out an artist called Geroge Shaw, he's done lots of pieces on the area including the Black Prince and the Hawthorne Tree

Not certain of ownership as such, but they definitely ran it for years. Ken, his wife was Mary (it’s slowly coming back) and his daughter was Jen with the mad hair. They left (when Gus took over?) and opened the original Browns in the lower precinct. The door policy there was crazy, let you in one week and not the next (although we were a bit young and full of beans tbf).

They subsequently opened the swanky new one, but that was around the time I moved away from Cov so never really experienced that one.

Used to get a lift home from the Dog by one of the bouncers (called Phil) when I was still only about 16 / 17 who lived down my road in Allesley Green. Always got in when he was on the door. In all honesty I can’t remember Gus at all, but from about 1989 onwards my memory is a little fuzzy. Ha.

My brother had his wedding reception in The Oak and the Cottage. Last time I went to the Oak it was like a Wasps members club.
Tbh didn’t go in there much as it was always full of older people. The Clarence used to be good but was just the wrong way to meander into town.
Travesty what happened to the cottage. Am I right in thinking it’s a pizza place now?
