Just as an aside, I have a large collection of pictures of Cov pubs (387 at last count), some gone, some changed names etc. If anyone has a particular pub they remember, let me know and I'll stick a picture up (if I have it!).

It varied. You used to be able to skin up on the bar at one time. Like all of Tile Hill it very much depended who was in there and how long they’d been on the pop for. Was also a regular for a few years. The gaffer (Moz?) could look after himself, but some of the bar staff used to get a bit of grief from time to time. Good for a game of pool.

Yeah used to all meet up at the Lime Tree Club on Friday when it opened and play a game of Snooker and then go on the pub crawl and get pissed.

I used to work in the Painted Lady back when I was an innocent, wouldn’t say boo to a goose, soft lad of an 18 year old (10 years ago). That certainly made me man up after working in the bar area on a busy Friday/Saturday night a few times. Rough and ready, but they were a nice bunch in there once they got to know you and realised you weren’t a dickhead

I won't hear a bad word against the Live And Let Live! I worked there behind the bar around the time my eldest daughter was born - 1971. Great crowd of locals, great staff and nowhere did I feel safer behind the bar, and I've worked loads of bars. The locals always had a whip round for the staff at Christmas, and there was usually half a week's wages each - good money back then! Happy days!

I drank in the Livvy many times and got on well with all in there. I've mentioned it before on here you go to a "spit and sawdust pub " on a regular basis and you'll get no trouble, unless you're silly enough to look for it. Met some great people in " dodgy" pubs and felt comfortable in them.

The woodlands was a great pub also , I remember playing football for them and we got through to the final at the Butts .... against the Black Prince ... proper Derby .. 1-1 the final score ... no extra time was played , we shared the cup so there was no afters , even though we all drank together ...

According to the metadata the date is 2012 but could be earlier. (p.s. Found the Standard Bearer from their Facebook page!) Have edited post.

My dad was a good darts player and he took on Leighton Rees the top darts player in the Hawthorn Tree pub in Tile Hill and beat him best of three. Great night that was. Any pics of the pub ?

Strangely enough, I used to meet a trio of brothers (the McGraths) in the Woodlands on a Friday night. The youngest brother, Gus, went on to buy and run the Dog and Trumpet and then established Scholars. RIP Gus. Top man!

I remember walking in the the Hertford one night, (now Rileys), and glancing over to the darts board where there was a big fella in a rdd shirt playing darts.
I said to my mate, who the fuck does he think he is, Leighton Rees?
We walked over and it was him! Fairly sure no one beat him all night.

I was asking the other month actually. The Ash Green Social club. Used to drive past the space it used to be in and I can’t find a photo of it anywhere on the internet.

it burnt down in the end I think.
I'm fairly sure someone told me they had a conversation along the lines of someone saying to them the Hawthorne burnt down and when they asked when the person replied next Friday!

My local pub for a few years was the Jolly Colliers in Walsgrave. And throwing darts in there one early evening was Eric Bristow. I did a double take at the bar but he knew the gaffer and stopped off for some practice before going to a tournament.

You’d have a long trip (depending where you live), and have to sit in the beer garden and get your drinks from a portable (dunno) serving thing. In Hammersmith. Not the only one either. Madness. Be fucking mayhem.

Think I had a very drunken conversation with him one night in scholars when I tried to convince him to do a ‘proper’ club night. He basically told me to make it happen. I wasn’t as motivated when sober and never did anything about it. Did he buy the Dog from the Brown family?

Not sure who he bought it from, but he turned it round as a really successful place. He did the same with Scholars. He was a real true gent. He would stand by the door at Scholars at closing time and make sure people got home okay. He is sadly missed. I knew him since 1964.
