I try and think behind the headline before clicking onto CET headlines, knowing it's likely to be a rehashed version of an existing story.

This time, though 'Striker move a step closer' proclaims the CET headline. OK, I thought, there's been no talk of a striker....let's see....................Gustavo Hamer

Got me again - they really are gash

Yeah I think we should start a CET thread and anytime an article is released, post it here without the bullshit adverts cutting everything up

Hello chaps,

(I really am putting myself up for criticism here being from CET but I’m really not prying, I’ve read this forum since I was about 13 and used to contribute a lot back in the Mowbray and Elvis days, before I was offered a job there.)

Although that article wasn’t me (I’m off until tomorrow) it really was just a simple mistake. We have a skeleton staff this week as one of us is on furlough and the other (me) has to have a day off at some point.

Yesterday we had a writer from another club step in and in a timed article for this morning he for some reason put that Hamer was a DM in his copy but a ST in the headline. I’ve just logged on and changed it. As evil as people think we are, this one really was just a simple mistake - and god I make enough of them myself.

So I’ll be the one to say that I am sorry.

I hope you’re all doing good during this weird time.

Tom, good of you to put an explanation forward and I appreciate some of the different content you've been writing since you've been in the role. However, generally the Telegraph's reputation precedes itself and therefore when I saw the headline this morning I immediately thought the worst and that this was another stunt to get clicks. I believe you when you say it was a mistake this time but the style of the paper over the last few years has resulted in this distrust. Hopefully you can help repair that with your work but it's not an easy job.

Doing well.............but thanks for the sentiment. To be honest, although the click bait headlines can be annoying, it is the lack of (effective) proof reading that I find disconcerting. I just assume that journalists are grounded in good grammar.

I used to have it bookmarked and visit several times a day, now I actively avoid the site. It's second hand information from elsewhere online, no effort at any effective reporting, terrible editing/proof reading and the site itself does its best to destroy your browser.

It also doesn't help that they've done their best in assisting an attempt to destroy the club in an effort to get at the owners and in doing so are now incapable of criticising the main reason we're homeless as they rely on the advertising income. A once proud institution that needs closing down.

I feel sorry for the journos who work in local news at the moment. The message coming from the higher ups is to constantly churn out the content that's going to get easy clicks as quickly as possible. It's very much a 'throw everything at the wall and hope something sticks strategy'. I doubt most of the lads working for publications like the Telegraph want to be writing articles about where Enobakhare is moving to or rehashing rumours from Twitter about players being sold but at the end of the days it's a job (and not a particularly well paying one I'd imagine) and they're just doing whatever tasks management assign them.

Tom, not your fault so never apologise for someone elses cock up, unless you're the editor or has proofed the story. Just glad to have someone from the Telegraph who has communicated with the folks here.

As someone working on the paper, you can appreciate why some fans are not happy with the arse licking stance the CT has taken regarding Wasps and the Council. Lets hope you can encourage the CT to take on board some of the opinions of the fans here, which see the other side of the coin, rather than taking the Trust's soundbites as the voice of the people as far as CCFC is concerned.

Good luck to you Tom

Hi Tom, kudos for you for coming on here and I respect you for that - thank you for your explanation.

Whilst this thread may appear harsh on the surface, the issue you have highlighted above isn't an isolated one, hence why posters have come out with the comments they have. With regard to CCFC, the CET has continuously made lazy mistakes and churned out misleading stories for years which is hugely frustrating as it was once a great source of information for myself, as I'm sure it was for others when growing up to get the latest scoop and inside info on transfer deals or general clubs news. Now it's just laced with hidden bias against the club, packed with obvious mistakes, and it appears that little, or any actual research is done anymore. We understand that the CET has been cut back to the bare bones, and the journalists/copy writers are under pressure to hit deadlines/targets. But I'm afraid that this isn't an excuse for the drop in the quality of the CET's CCFC stories over the past few years, which has become horribly tiresome - especially on CovLive.

Haha! Everyone is allowed to hate what they want to hate. My job allows me to write about Coventry City every day. If I would have gone into another line of work I would probably still be doing that on a blog or on a podcast in my spare time so I feel very lucky that it is my nine to five.

I think one big frustration for all of us in local sports media over the last few years is that we can spend a good few hours working on something creative that those who do read it really enjoy but when our numbers return at the end of the day our biggest stories are fan reactions and transfer links.

That tells us that readers enjoy fan reactions and transfer links more than what some would call “good journalism”.

I think people do also like the transfer stories. Especially lately, it’s bloody exciting to have a €1.5m Brazilian linked with us and I have done my best to ensure what we do report is as we understand it and not as ‘FootballInsider’ understands it.

I personally think the way forward is video and podcasts and I am keen to do those more and more (we have a promotion special coming out soon that is essentially a 5,000 word online timeline with videos and pictures that I hope fans will all enjoy).

I have only been with the company since the start of the season, I worked for the club prior to that, and for as long as I have been here all we have tried to do is to create free content that we hope you’ll enjoy.

I think sometimes we do get things wrong, that’s life, and we try to correct them.

I am going to carry on with my day off now! Keep bashing me when I deserve it, it keeps me on my toes and stops me getting lazy.

P.s. I’m not a Sunderland fan, I’ve seen someone on here keep saying that I am. I’m a Coventry fan. PUSB.

It also depends on how you push them and how click baity they can be in terms of the numbers.

It might well be that an in-depth article doesn't get the same "numbers" but is it tweeted every 5 minutes like some other stories with misleading titles?

Again, not really your personal fault but the industry you are in and fair play for just being straight up about it

I think I’m right in saying papers usually have someone write the headlines specifically with no input from the article author to get the best click through. I’ve seen lots of national journos complain the headline doesn’t reflect their article.

@Tom Leach being serious for a minute, the radio silence around the indemnity clause Wasps asked for is very frustrating as is the difference in tone between non answers from Wasps that seem to not report something they won’t talk about and non answers from Sisu that say “they’re not talking”.

An update article giving background to the claims by the club, what “the Telegraph understands”, some input from someone in EU law about the ability to drop a complaint, and comment from the club/Wasps even if it’s just printing “they refused to talk” would go a long way. Probably wouldn’t even need a click bait headline

Credit to you for posting on here Tom. In my opinion the Telegraph receive some harsh critism although to be fair some of it is founded. That morning article these days is a bit jumbled up. It seems there is a remit to try and summarise everything in one headline often which is confusing. I used to log in every morning and look forward to the Telegraph article but it seems there has been a sway to more of a summary of yesterday's news.

On a side note it was interesting listening to the recent Sky Blues Extra podcast about the relationship between the club and local media even back in his time covering the club for CWR in particular how it soured in the Strachan era leading upto relegation. Back then a lot of people were critical of him and Adam Dent who was the CET reporter at the time. Very difficult to get the balance right I imagine and you are never going to please everyone.

I can attest from personal experience how difficult it is to get anything out of Nick Eastwood or Wasps that's actually worth reporting.

"Wasps chief ignores offer of discussion about CCFC"

That type thing.

The fact they still haven't reported about the wasps director in the brothel is telling, they would have a field day if it was fisher.

I think this is the major issue people have with the CET.... Wasps get a free pass with things (probably due to the amount they spend on advertising) but anything sisu/the football club does gets put under a microscope... If sisu refused to talk about the situation it would be all over the paper but when wasps don't it isn't even reported and it's this that causes all the confusion and anger from people.

If it was the other way round there would have been a campaign last year for sisu to drop the indemnity clause from the paper (as there was when we moved to Northampton), yet not a mention of it because it is wasps. Surely @Tom Leach as a ccfc fan this gives you a chance none of us have to make a real difference

As others have said I used to visit the site daily, not just for CCFC news but local news in general. Now I rarely go it. Its not just the clickbait headlines either. The site has so much advertising and autostart videos its practically unusable. Appreciate the advertising is needed but it shouldn't be at the expense of having a site that works.

Agree with this. If they are asked questions and refuse to comment then report that, it builds a picture.

Fisher opens his mouth and there's FOI requests flying in to see if he's telling the truth. Did the same happen when Wasps were going to move into Higgs and claimed they'd looked at 20 sites?

Anything negative about Wasps is completely ignored.

When their manager went, one of their players said something like "He wants the truth to come out".

Now if it was one of ours "CCFC star demands the truth from the board about manager's sacking".

What was in there? A copy and paste of the article with that line missing.
