Good. We absolutely need a quality keeper that we can rely on rather than playing musical chairs with a load of sub-par ones.

I completely trust the recruitment at the club at the minute but I wasn't 100% convinced by Binks as a defender on what I saw. Similar to what others have said on McNally I thought Binks was suited to a back three... Less so as one of two centre halves. Very comfortable on the ball and can play a bit but struggled against a physical, strong target man type.

I agree but it might suggest left back is the only way we plan to upgrade our leaky defence and I’m not sure Bidwell defending was the problem….

Clearly upgrading Collins would also help ….

I feel like I’m being pessimistic about every potential signing (bar Stamenic), but is Luis Binks the answer to our defence prayers?? Like he’s alright but he didn’t exactly shore-up our defence last season? Is he markedly better than Kitching? It’d be the exact same defence as last year, is that what we want?

can we really have a5th centre half when we play 2 ?

only 2 would even make the bench ….

I don’t think he is but if you class Lati as a RB it works.

Which doesn’t look like a defence capable of finishing top 2, really hope GIMOC is wrong on this one.

to be fair it appears as if Stamenic is a done deal. He didn't say they would be announced this week. The club are clearly waiting to announce incomings, which leads me to believe that Raphael is more of a development talent than first team talent

Robins thinks so

As ive stated before Kitching really hasn't hit the heights MR expected of a 4 million quid signing. Doesn't do some of the defensive basics anywhere near as well as he should

If this is true then it’s a good signing. We do still need that experienced CB like McNair and that would be good competition.

Kitching I thought was miles better than Binks last year generally. Far more aggressive... Although his form did dip a bit in the 2nd half of the season. Binks was exceptional when he came on Man United but can't recall him having many other very good games. Sounds like he developed very well as the season progressed from what Robins said but I'm on the fence on this one.

Yeah agreed, biggest waste of 4 mil we’ve ever spent. Even at the time I had absolutely no idea why we were madly chasing after him. Probably lost at least 1/2-3/4 of that investment I imagine?

Another for the vault. He definitely needs to improve and he will, I would have thought we would learn not to write a player off after one season.

Binks is raw, much like thomas, but there is clear upside to work with and develop - the semi final cameo is the blueprint to be the norm not exception.

Good signing. But we still need a horrible old bastard type at back for me!

True true, I’ve not written him off but so far it’s looking like a waste of money. Time will tell of course, I’m always happy to be proven wrong because if so then we’ve got a better team. I just hope we strengthen the defence more than buying the exact same defence as last season, it was absolutely woeful at times.

I know Fadz was good for us but that was in a back 3 where he had cover both sides to help him out. Now we play with just 2 CB’s I don’t think we have room for the “horrible old slow-poke bastard” type.

Also look at all the top teams in the prem, I’m not saying “get their players” obviously but we should try to emulate them as much as possible in my view. None of the top teams play with a horrible old bastard at the back. Arsenal probably have the best defence and they play with 2 measured, strong, calm defenders in Gabriel and Saliba. Man City likewise, always a young, fairly quick CB pairing. Same for most teams in the top half. I think we’ve done well with the horrible slow bastard type in the past but we need to look forward and be more progressive if we want to get into the prem, just my personal opinion.

If that isn't writing a player off, I'd hate to see what you say about someone you do. All I'm saying is it's a bit early to call him a waste of money, we do this every year. Simms & Wright were a waste of money for much of last season.

He’s alright, I’ve nothing against him, I just haven’t seen anything spectacular yet that’s all. As I was saying above, I’m not writing him off yet, give him another season at least but I think the general consensus is our defence was shocking at times. If we have the same defence then how can we expect a different outcome? Unless all defenders involved have come on leaps and bounds, which is possible I suppose, just not probable.

Think he's the better footballing centre half compared to them all last season, and actually prefer him to kitching. Played brilliantly in the fa cup semi as well and when the goal that wasn't went in, he went nuts. Lovely to see that passion and think there's so much more to come. Would be all for this one!

I'd prefer Binks and McNair to the Barnsley pair tbh. Thomas , if he irons out his blunders could improve but not a fan of Kitching but like to be proved wrong, ie Simms

Yeah maybe it’s a bit early to say but as it stands we’ve, at the very least, overspent on him. Just for the record I actually thought Simms & Wright would come good, a lot of people were slating them on here but I distinctly remember saying give them time and in the end they came good. I promise you I’m not the mean old pessimistic bastard I come across as, it’s just the transfers that have been suggested on here have been regressive and not bold enough in my view.

Perhaps re phrase - we need some experience/edge - wether that’s someone happy to play 20 games as centre half or midfielder - we just need that bit of edge/experience etc

Yeah agreed, someone with a bit of nous and experience but also isn’t getting past it. The 25-28 mark is probably ideal?

Binks was only on loan so didn't, rightly so, get nearly as much game time as the £4 million pound CB we signed. I think Binks would be a great signing. Left footed CBs are more expensive than right footers, so to get a young british CB who knows the group, knows the system, enjoys being at the club would be a great signing.
