Used to be like that about it myself as a fan. If I was unable to get to a game home or away it would be a disaster. Does it matter now in the grand scheme of things? Not as much as it did.

people need passions in their life
maybe family
maybe travel
maybe jobs
maybe sport

without these passions we walk around as robots
if football is your passion, then yes is it important

My late grandads last words were "im not very well"
but before that he asked " how did the city get on today"

so for those who it is a passion, then yes it is part of their complete life

I have a similar story. My late father had peritonitis here in Spain when he was here for a holiday and was rushed into hospital on Friday night and operated on first thing the following Saturday morning and it was all a bit hit and miss because he´d not told anybody how bad he had been feeling and we were informed that he might not survive surgery. When we were allowed to see him in intensive care on Saturday evening he was struggling to say something to us because of all the tubes in his nose and mouth etc. My spanish wife was worried that something was seriously wrong and that we should alert the doctor on duty, which we we duly did. As it turned out he was trying to say " how did the city get on ?"
