It's great that we can finally have this, I'm not saying we should change the team (especially if winning) every week but when players need a rest, we can now do it

CB:brown,wood,malaga,edje,cameron 5 players for 2 positions

DL:hussey, kilbane, brown, edje ( 4 players for 1 position but only 1 natural, could be problematic down the line)

DR:clarke,christie (2 for 1)

Midfield: jennings,barton,kilbane,fleck,thomas,baker,bell,mcsheffrey 8 players for 4 positions)

Strikers: mcdonald,ball,elliott,rod,jeffers (5 players for 2 positions-possible trialist too)

Whilst it can be argued some players are not good enough quality (jeffers, rod, bell etc) there is no doubting the squad is overall in better shape than lasr year. centre defence and midfield both seem very strong although we could do with 1 more CM possibly).

Lets hope all the players shine this season when given a chance.

No it isn't, successful squads generally use a core of about 15-16 players, a settled team with an effective system is what Cov need.

ive not once disputed a core...we had a core last season, but if you dont have backup you are done for...which is what we have now.

if we have mk dons away on tuesday night, why not play baker, bell, mcsheffrey, rod etc vs tranmere at home on the saturday? it gives thorn options.

Wholesale changes would be unsettling, but the odd rotation and rest will be good.

Cover for injuries and suspensions good too.

Considering from that midfield list we couldn't field Barton, Bell, Fleck, Jennings or Thomas on Tues, we still fielded a reasonable midfield.

Agree again, bar we need a natural poacher to pressurise and / rest allow cody to be rested.

Looking at the 3 promoted teams in seems squad rotation is required.

Charlton used 34 players, Huddersfield 30 and Sheffield Wednesday 38. You do need a nucleus though in the season. Below is the number who played in 70% or more of games.

Charlton 9
Huddersfield 6
Sheff Wednesday 7

Charlton had 6 players who played 90% of league games.

Not at all when the runaway champions had 9 players who played over 70% of the games and 6 who played over 90%. I'm actually proved right.

Most sides dont use a lot of players ,you need a squad for injuries and suspensions but you would certainly hope that 8-9 players would play 40ish games a season

My take on it is you do need a big enough squad for cover but you need a strong backbone of 6 or 7 key players who maintain form and fitness throughout. I guess ours are Murphy, Thomas, Wood, Mcdonald and probably the mid fielders Barton and Jennings if he signs.

squad rotation is nonsense for a club in our position. you are talking about a bunch of players all of about equal quality otherwise you are never playing your best team. Your best team should play (and want to play) every game. Your best team with get you to your highest achievable position. a squad of mediocre players will get you nowhere.

tiredness is b*ll*x. Their entire life is geared up to being at the peak of fitness. It is all they have to do.
