I have just been reading an article on the FLW website titled Coventry City rank worst for this championship stat. This season we have missed 74 big chances the most in the division and way more than other playoff contenders Middlesborough being next with 51. I know our defence has been rubbish and that's why are goal difference isnt great but it also could have been a lot better if we had scored a least 10 of those big misses, let's hope we don't miss out on a playoff spot on goal difference. It would be gutting.

A lot of that must be earlier in the season?

It feels as though we’re creating less chances now but being more clinical

Yeah I think most must have been earlier in season, we have scored 36 times in 24 games since Lampard took over, which only Leeds can beat. Would be nice if we could thump someone before end of the season though, just to make our goal difference a bit closer to those around us

I think quite a few have been Simms and BTA when Wright was injured

Wonder what it was last time we gotcto the play offs?
Seemed quite a few games where we created lots of chance but sneaked by by the odd goal or drew.

That's what happens when you have this guy up front.

Simms has a higher xG than Wright this season. He has scored 5 less goals. Abysmal finisher.

Always wondered who and what determines a ‘big’ chance

I'd be happy to get through to the play-offs as we are and then manage to get clinical in the play-offs themselves.

Bassette is statistically one of the worst players in the Championship too. Think there's only 4 behind him.

Give him a break mate, he’s a young kid. Works his bollocks off, first season in England.
He’s raw but there’s a player there %

It shows in our goal difference compared to our rivals. Too many narrow victories not enough 3-0's

I'd be surprised if he doesn't go in to be a decent championship striker as a minimum.

Simms is a poor player.
Yes he had a little purple patch the second half of last season, a bit like Mark Mcnulty did, but like Mcnulty he's done nothing since.

I'd take a 6 goals in a 3 game spell from him... especially if it's both semis & Wembley!

The frustrating thing with Simms is he needs a run of games to get going before he scores goals. He gets rusty sitting on the bench. He cannot just turn it on when he comes on. I think with EMC going off the boil a bit now maybe Simms needs a run of games. At least while he’s on the field he can keep defenders busy and make space for others to exploit even if he’s not scoring himself.

Yeah great, but what has he done since?

Is a goal every 6 games from a multi million pound centre forward good enough for you?

2 completely different points we're talking about though. The conversation was about poor xG and big chances missed, with Bassette being one of our strikers and being one of the worst players in the league (statistically speaking) contributing to that.

The point you're making I agree with. Works hard, wears his heart on his sleeve and has the makings of being a fan favourite. The 2 things aren't mutually exclusive.

Being rusty suggests he isn't training hard enough.
Wright has months out injured, comes back into the team and bags a hat trick on his second start.
Allen spends the season sat on his arse, gets a chance and gets m.o.m

If other players can hit the ground running why can't Simms?

You don't get the luxury of taking time to bed in in the championship where every point is so valuable.

No it's not, but all games will be on telly & will be more likely to flog him at a decent price.

Out of interest how many are from the same chance? For example Wrights goal against Burnley, Rudoni's initial chance and EMCs follow up would be classed as 2 big chances missed, but Wright scored. In this case the 3 big chances wouldn't equate to us scoring 3 goals instead of 1.

He got a 5 year deal at Reading where he failed miserably making only 13 appearances and managing to score a grand total of 1 goal. I'm sure he took them for a lot of money, but he's rated as one of the worst signings in the club's history, that's quite some legacy.

Yes he played for Sunderland, they gave him15 games and he excelled there managing 2 goals before they fucked him off back to Reading without wanting to extend his stay.

He also played for Scotland, making his debut as a substitute in one of Scotlands worst ever results, a 3-0 thumping from the mighty Kazakhstan

Last season saw him turning out for the mighty Shamrock Rovers in the Irish pub league, where again he managed 1 goal, this time from 10 appearances.

Looking back over his career I think it's fair to say his best and most successful time was here at Cov when he had a good half a season in league 2, Which was about his level on a good day, and he owes that to MR.

His wasted career should serve as a warning to all young players not to get their heads turned by greedy agents offering a quick buck before they are ready to step up.
If he'd of stayed here another year and continued to develop under MR he could of gone on to be a really decent player at a much better club than Reading!

Or his legacy is he mugged Reading off for 2 million (10k a week was the rumoured figure over 4 years) and when he left there no English football league club would touch him.

If he'd of fulfilled the potential he showed under MR he may of been able to retire to Orange County.

Not helped by letting poor teams like Stoke come back from 2-0 and only nicking it 3-2. Losing 4-0 on aggregate to Derby. So on and so on.....

The best strikers and teams in the league generally have the most missed bug chances (because they create the most).

This season is a bit of an outlier statistically with us way up there. It shows that we have been profligate I guess
