I’d sell. Doesn’t fit the preferred formation, didn’t set the world alight last season, and it frees up a space in the squad (and the associated wage savings) to seek a striker who fits the system better. All well and good saying he might come good, but if we persist with 4231 - and every signing we’ve made thus far suggests that is the case - I’d say it’s pretty unlikely he’ll ever pull up trees here. Take the profit while we can.

Anyone else worried that getting Dublin back wouldn't work out?

Older, was flogging 2 bed terraced houses last time I saw him...not sure it's as clear cut as him coming back and scoring 20+ goals again next season.

Don't forget the Portsmouth sell on! Every young player has one.

I think we should string them along all summer saying we need a replacement then loan him to them on loan deadline day with a view to a January move.

Wouldn’t look at him as a viable option myself, partially for the reasons you state, partially due to the formation, and partially due to our transfer policy. We sold him at the top of the cycle, so I’d be wary of bringing him back. Hibs evidently haven’t seen enough to warrant bringing him in.

I''m not advocating that we go 4-4-2. I just think we're unlikely to see the best of Chaplin with 4-2-3-1 and therefore it would make sense to sell him provided we can get a good enough offer. I think £700k is too low.

Would all of any fee be available to the manager ? MR has stated publically he has two forward players very firmly on his radar and he has also said he needs to ship one or two out. If Bright is one he’s after I’m assuming the other is a striker which imo we need but would the sale of Chaplin mean we would need a second striker ? Personally I’d like to see Chaplin stay think he has real potential but having said that we were at our best at the latter end of last season when he was out the side. Decisions, decisions who would be a manager ?

I'd like him to stay; I'm sure he'll come good after a full pre-season. He's not very fast, but has quick feet and would be a terror in the box with good enough service.

His finishing is tripe.

I heard Robins has installed barn doors at Ryton for Chaplin to practice his shooting on.

If the fee is correct and up-front I think I'd sell. He might come good, but there wasn't much evidence of it last season. Not as quick as we were told he was. Supposedly a poacher who spent most of his time dropping deep. Doesn't suit the managers preferred system. Ended last season on the bench.

So if we can make a profit on him right now we should. If he comes good at a new club, good for him.

We'd still have Hiwula and Baka, with Biamou to come back and Ponti waiting in the wings and Bremang below that. Plus potentially the new striker MR is chasing which this cash might make happen.

He couldn't even make our team last season in league one his value will only decrease the longer he's on the bench

Seems a player there somewhere but Pompey fans were saying the same when we went for him. Did they miss him? Not really.
Think I'd be inclined to take that IF we can guarantee getting one of our main targets.

Well I don’t think we paid £500k to Pompey up front? So as long as they are paid off and we make some profit and go for a proven goal scorer that’s great business .

If a Championship club is after you your head is turned.

Difficult decision for me - think I’d give him another season as you can see talent there. Bit of confidence and he could be great.

But will anyone bid 700k again if it doesn’t work out?

At a time where we have little upfront, I would be concerned about ‘cashing in’

Word has it from Ryton he is a really good finisher. I wouldn't mind either way. I think there is a lot to come from him, but I don't think he is quite ready yet

Look at the disallowed goal at Bristol in one of his early games, he's a very good finisher just lacking confidence like Esoterica says (albeit showed great composure at Sunderland)

Yet the coaches at the second best side in the league last season think otherwise

Eaves has scored close to 20 in the last two seasons for gillingham - not a bad player at this level

If we're playing one up top, which I think we will then cash in. If we were to switch to 2, I'd still rather McNulty be one of the 2 over Chaplin if it were a simple choice.

Simple decision, sell while he’s worth something, and re invest.

Too low ? He is too small & too slow for league 1 I think 700k recoup wha we spent & make some profit is great business

reinvest in what though?
Another young player with potential? How long do we give him?

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you but if the model is to buy young players to develop and then move them on what is the criteria for letting them go?
If we have faith in our scouting and coaching then are we really maximising our return making 200 grand profit?
Of course if there is any truth to this maybe the player may decide he wants to go and take it our of our hands.

because you make good and bad buys
if you can make a profit on your bad buys, you take it and move on

Portsmouth drove a hard bargain and Robins only got the deal over the line very close to the transfer deadline
I'll be amazed if Pompey haven't got a high percentage of any sell on fee

My main issue with Chaplin is that we don’t play to his strengths. Is there any point in keeping him if we don’t? I’d like to keep him but £700k seems like decent business to me.

Nothing to stop us adding a sell on fee if he may come good at another club using a different system.

It's chicken and egg, do we keep him, pair him with Max and hope he comes good? or do we take the cash and try and sign a proven goal scorer?

It depends whether Robins and his staff consider him a bad buy.
I'm no so sure they do, interest from a championship club would suggest he wasn't a bad buy.
