Bottom line is, whether people thought he had a good game or, not, having him in the team last night made a difference.

Godden and Walker are going to be too similar to play up too together if we’re going more direct.

If we’re going to be adapting the formation and style, we will need to strengthen with a better quality number 9 - he did well last night but it’s needs to be consistent and not just the odd game when he’s fired up.

The style made a difference but it’s obvious he was pinned as 4th choice and the walker signing is looking pretty odd - he scores goals - nearly 40 in two years and now seems surplus to requirements

Assuming we play two strikers a few more times this season, I think it is likely that Godden, max and walker will all get chances to play.
Can already see that two intensive games per week, niggles and isolation is stretching our squad - this will only continue. I wouldn't write-off Baka for the same reasons.

Is Walker like godden ? But hopefully a little bit more pace.

wonder if plan long term will be to have Walker/max/baka on rotation

If we’re going more direct the final point makes no sense.

I can’t see Godden being dropped so would expect the 2nd striker to be rotated depending on fitness. Think we are more likely to see god and Walker together than Baka and Walker

Maybe it was the beers I was drinking but I didn’t think he offered much. However, him being there changed the shape and how Reading played which impacted the game a lot. I suspect if we’d lost the game everyone would be slating him for the same performance. Like I said, maybe it was the beers I was drinking.

Great thread though just for triggering Grendel.

I like Max and the tactical change by MR worked really well and stopped Readings effectiveness in a higher press. However, his lack of pace was exposed last night

I’d have major doubts about playing more direct with a front 2 of Walker/Baka and Godden

As a person, love Max and thought he did OK. Had some good flick ons and helped Godden out well. Tucked that one away and there would be a meltdown here lol!

Anyone with some proper footballing knowledge please explain why Max started as opposed to Walker? Seems strange as the bloke is supposedly a higher quality player. Is it style, physique, technique, or fitness?
I'd put it down to a mixture of them all.
Style, id say he was more a player to run of shoulder and get in behind.
Physicality, he looks 8 stone soaking wet through, doesnt look like the sort to hold a CH off after bringing down a long ball waiting for support.
Fitness, he was 10 yards off the pace before he went in to isolation fpr 2 weeks.

Why do you think it would be the odd game when he's fired up? I mean he was playing non league 4 season ago, came back from being a joke figure in L2, came back from being bombed in L1 and has come back from being bombed in the Championship. Of anyone in the squad, motivation is the least concern. He is inconsistent but that's not the reason.

You’re not the only one! Nice blokes/autographs and selfies do not make a good player. For some strange reason people think it does.
Without doubt Biamou puts in a shift but the chance in the first half where he miscontroolled it and particularly the one in the second half where he hit the bar, I’m afraid that chance has too go in. Sometimes, particularly at this level, the chances are few and far between and have to be taken especially against the better teams.
It was interesting when interviewed Robins saying that if Walker was fully fit that he would have been in ahead of Max-seems it’s only the fans that go over the top with the love in.

Thought he had a good game. Linked up well and he and Godden almost complimented each other where as before maybe he would be too close to a strike partner and his flick ons would usually come to very little unless picked up by midfield
Shame his shot didn't go in

Are you blaming Max for being too close to a strike partner when winning flick ons????
Surely Max is where the ball is landing as he's winning the ball/header to flick on, he can't choose his position, his position is where the ball is. Surely its the strike partners positioning that is wrong and not Maxs whos currently getting blamed for where the ball lands?
Fucking absurd this forum at times

No he didn’t. He only changed when Jobello was injured - we were winning games anyway - the point most of his first choice midfield now are not able to play as they don’t fit the formation - the other issue still is we are on target to concede nearly 100 goals in the season

He had a few poor touches which I can forgive as he is going to be rusty having not played at all really. Just think the key difference was the options from having him there rather than his performance. More than happy to give him a chance as I am Baka. Think we need to drop the two AM and have two strikers and an extra CM maybe with COH playing as a 10 occasionally. As somebody said the box has served it’s purpose, time to move on.

Who can’t play? The only midfielder who doesn’t look too suited to this formation is maybe COH and Hillsner who we haven’t really seen anyway. Hamer, Sheaf, Kelly, Shipley and Allen all suited to last nights formation.

Good then that our 3rd or 4th choice back up striker got into those positions on his first ever start in the Championship against the run away league leaders who had previously only conceded 3 goals in 8 games.

Allen O Hare are not going to feature in a midfield 3 like this and unlikely Kelly will either - I suspect he’ll go in January

Because when he is trying to prove a point in an odd game he’s fired up and is going to perform - his problem is that he is unable to perform to the required level consistently because he is not at the required level. I’ve nothing against him but want what’s best for the club rather than being sentimental.

Disagree G, the 5-3-2 can be turned into a 4-3-3 utilising those attacking midfielders if we need to go for it or we can turn back to the box if we need to hold it tight. Agree we are conceding too many but the goals are largely of our own making which you’d hope will be cut down over time.

Hardly the pattern and team evolve. Fiddled with the front positions not the back. Played football when possible but not when it wasn’t. You need to admit Max did ok

You must really rate Jobello if you think him being missing was the difference when we lost 0-4 to Rotherham, 0-1 to Tranmere, failed to score at MK Dons and were losing 1-0 at HT vs Fleetwood.

To be fair, we were asking in previous posts, where the quality cover for Godden was coming from.

This

Yes, we were still picking up wins using 433, but the difference in our play and passing ability from 433 to 541 was night and day. We looked a completely different team.

It' interesting that people refer to Biamou's age and not Godden's. He is only about 6 months older. I think Biamou was excellent last night, made a real difference having up there. Shame he missed his two chances but don't forget that Godden ballsed one over as well. I feel they could develop into a nice partnership regardless of their ages...
