Train Dreams - Netflix.

I read the reviews beforehand and one of them said it was a " beautiful film ", which it really is.

Joel Edgerton proves that he`s amongst the best male actors around at the moment.

A very simple plot - a lonely railway worker ( Edgerton ), turned logger in the American midwest, finds his soulmate and happiness ( Felicity Jones ), setting up home in a little log cabin on the edge of a lake, where they live a simple but content life.

Tragedy seems to follow him around, as he struggles with reality.

It sounds soppy, but it`s anything but.

The beautiful cinematography is as much part of the film as the performances and although it`s slow and dreamy, it kept my attention all the way through.

I`d have very happily gone to see this on the cinema and I`ve ordered the book.

I am broke and stingy so I'm after tips for Walter Presents... stuff on Channel 4. Seaside Hotel seemed a bit sh*t. Revival was ok. Who's seen good stuff on there?

Deutschland 83 and Deutschland 86 are very good, very entertaining and with a banging 80`s soundtrack.

During the last throws of Communist East Germany, a young Eastern German lad is recruited as a spy by the Stasi.

There`s a lot of black humour in it, taking the piss out of both the East and West Germans.

A really good cast, who you instantly bond with.

With the added bonus of one of the most beautiful women on the planet, Sonja Gerhardt playing the love interest and fellow spy.

We've seen a few of the series on there. The ones I remember enjoying are

French:
A Deadly Union
'____ By The Lake' series (up to the one that seemed too similar to covid so we didn't bother)
Crimson Wedding
The Forest

Belgian:
The Break

German:
Deutschland 83/86/89

Danish:
The Team

Not sure how many of them are still available

Watched a documentary the other night, Predators. It’s about the series ‘To Catch a Predator’, which used to be on in the US. It was a show all about catching paedophiles and seems to have been really popular and spawned the vigilante paedophile hunters you hear about nowadays.

Not entirely sure how I felt about it…which I think in part is the theme of the whole thing.

Next up, for a lighter watch I’m looking forward to watching Riefenstahl. About the film director who inspired Hitler.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Heads up for everyone watching. Because of Christmas the last episode is out early this week, on Christmas Eve.

Was looking for news of a renewal and discovered that they ordered two series up front so don't expect too much to be resolved by the finale.

Not quite TV, though he has got his mug in there, but the Chris Hawkins Names In Songs segment he has, is very funny at times.

Not sure about this...

The last series of Scrubs (not counting that weird spin off) had the perfect ending so was a comeback really needed?

Just finished this series of Pluribus.

I`m on the fence with it tbh.

Some episodes seemed to be a whole lot of nothing, where as others were really good.

Also I don`t think much of the acting with some of the cast, particularly the lady who plays Zosia, in support of Carol ( Rhea Seehorn ).

It`s done enough to make me want to watch the next series though, as I`m interested to see where they take it.

Very interesting take. There was a whole lot of nothing regularly occuring in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, to my mind. And they were often the best episodes.

My missus and I absolutely love it and find the best episodes are indeed the ones where not all lot happens.

The one where Carol just keeps ringing and getting the same recorded messages, over and over, we thought was really funny.

Can't wait for the second season.

And we also thought Karolina Wydra as Zosia, was great. We also think Rhea Seahorn is absolutely nailed on for some awards.

Each and every to their own.

Oh and it was the episodes that were a whole lot of nothing, that for me, reminded me that it WAS Vince Gilligan and why I love his stuff so much. That was his imprint on it, right there, as far as my missus and I were concerned.

What really annoyed me, was that Carol was supposed to be this feisty, strong and independent woman, who was totally resistant to the " others ", then all of sudden she gets a bit randy, abandons all of her principles and morals and jumps straight into bed with Zosia ! ( I appreciate she was achingly lonely, but she`d just lost her soul mate and was supposed to be grieving )

I`m a massive fan of stuff like this and the premise was fantastic, but there was just little bits of it that just let it down for me, her and Zosia being one of them.

Just started on Mr Mercedes too.

I`ve read the book, which is very dark and this just feels like a made for tv drama, despite the acting talents of Brendan Gleeson in the lead.

I`m not sure I`ll be bothering with series 2/3 tbh.

Yeah, I can understand that, but I didn't feel that she DID just jump into bed with Zosia. Felt like it was over some time for me.

What length of period actually was it, in terms of the show's timeline, do we know? The clock was constantly flirting back and forth, wasn't it. Days and hours before and days and hours after.

I'm loving it although I'm slightly annoyed to discover they haven't even begun work on writing season 2 let alone filming it.

Apple ordered 2 seasons up front, surely you'd make both back to back?

Not a fan of the huge gaps between seasons all shows seem to have now. Is it some plan to boost views as you have to rewatch before a new season?

Thought Pluribus had some moments of true brilliance (the cold open with the Peruvian girl for example) but the show works better as a thought experiment than it does as a drama imo. The camerawork and the performances are all there but the plot just isn’t as propulsive as BB or even BCS. Seehorn is brilliant but Carol as a character is just all over the place in terms of being a resistance fighter one week and totally self-indulgent the next.

We Got 62 ‘Breaking Bad’ Episodes In The Time ‘Pluribus’ May Give Us 18

Pluribus season 2 is very far away and it's immensely frustrating, given the way TV used to work. Practically no shows can manage short gaps now.

Looking for a new series to watch. Ideally a few seasons long. I seem to be running out!

I have been going back through the list I’ve kept on my phone which is a mixture of recommendations on here and other research over the years.

Appreciate it depends on taste, but I’m pretty flexible on that, other than I want a drama/thriller not a comedy.

Currently down to;

Snowfall
Godfather of Harlem
Animal Kingdom (always seem to come back to this but I’ve never pulled the plug - not sure why)
Tulsa King

Side note: appears Animal Kingdom is available via a service called ‘U’ - I’ve never heard of it but it used to be UKTV Play (which I’d also never heard of). Anyone used it?

Funny that, because my missus and I have just read that and we both said the exact same thing. That you WOULD be all over the place if the scenario really happened. Days and days, 24 hours a day, of it just being you, alone

I think that is exactly how it would play out. You literally would be all the place. One minute thinking you want to turn the world back and the next, believing it all to be futile.

The guy from Paraguay is quite a different proposition. There is no way Carol would have walked through a jungle and for hundreds of miles on end.

You have to remember, she has come from a celebrity background with privilege and luxury, as a famous writer.

All makes perfect sense to us.

I`d watch Animal Kingdom first, it`s brilliant and hooks you in straight away. ( the cast is prefect too ).

Godfather of Harlem, is good, but gets a bit " samey " as it goes along.

Never took to Tulsa King and haven`t watched Snowfall.

You’re right, but I don’t think the show has done an especially good job of signposting her changing motivations. To the extent that I’m not entirely sure what Carol even wants episode-by-episode - that’s made it hard for me to warm to her as the show’s central character. I’m much more engaged by all the Manousos stuff.

Fair point.

I just see her as confused, whereas Manousos is completely single-minded.

The Lowdown! Was waiting on this for months, really loved the vibe and the performances. Also, just watched Blue Velvet again, first time in about a decade. Still among my favourite films, initially watched it on bootleg VHS in the mid 80's. One from my mis-spent youth.
