I've ranked these in order of how rousing they are combined with a great tune:

1. French
2. Welsh
3. Russian
4. Italian - once the twiddly bits at the start are finished we get the operatic soaring music
5. Irish - not bad but lacking something
6. Scots - a bit of a repetitive sombre and depressing cross between a funeral march and a Radiohead track.

English (UK really - we don't seem to have our own - would love Land of Hope and Glory). The worst anthem in the world IMO. Terrible tune, terrible words. All the others to me, seem to be anthems that get sung whereas God Save the Queen always sounds like it has to be a drunken football chant and incapable of tunefulness.

You've opened yourself a can of worms on here mate. Expect to see plenty of 'INGURLUND IS V ONLY 1 DAT MATTERS' along with pride, passion and a whole host of BRITISHNESS adjectives

Well I've tried to be objective and as hinted would love ours to be the best in the world. I'm envious of the French and Welsh anthems in particular.

Italian, hands down. You couldn’t write a peace of music that fits the people of a country any better.

Hate our 'National anthem'. Says nothing about nationhood and is simply a brown nosing establishment dirge paying homage to the sitting monarch.

Land of hope and glory any day of the week.

The Welsh national anthem before a big game under a closed roof at the Millenium Stadium is on a different level to any other.

Flower of Scotland is my personal favourite.

Jerusalem should also be a contender for the English National Anthem.

A song about the capital of Israel should be England's national anthem?

(It's bad enough having Little Town of Bethlehem as Holland's national anthem).

Love the Jerusalem tune but the words could do with changing.
You're right about the British anthem HH, only the first verse is well known. I believe there's something about smiting the troublesome Scots in one of the versus.
Didn't know that about the Dutch anthem, going to have to youtube that and have a listen.

For me the anthem that best evokes the country it represents is the Japanese, it's not a rousing tune but it's very atmospheric.

Hands up if you thought "Tulips from Amsterdam" was Holland's national anthem or that Germans still sing "Deutschland Uber Alles"?

Always loved Brazil's national anthem. Thanks to an affinity to Kimi Raikkonen (especially during his McLaren years, Suzuka 2005 still gets me on edge!) I quite like the Finnish national anthem.

I quite often find myself whistling the Italian national anthem. Sticks in your head that one. Too many years watching Schumacher win races does that....

It's awful mate. Are you sure you're not confusing the national anthem with 'Finlandia' which is superb?

No, It's the actual anthem. It's a rose-tinted glasses thing because of when I heard it. If I'd heard it away from that, I agree it'd be just another rubbish anthem.
