Was hatching some hipster football thing where they go to different derbies around the world. Got me wondering what the best are.

Rivalries don't count so no Barce v Real, it has to be the same city or very close so Shalke v Dortmund would.

A few that come to mind instantly are:
River Plate v Boca Juniors
Celtic v Rangers
Any of the big Istanbul 3

Rome and Milan derbies maybe although they are never fighting for the league any more with Juve doing so well and less of a communist fascist thing going on.

What have you got?

I've put it on my list as it's obviously massive, involves national, political and sectarian rivalries but I don't think it's the be all and end all.

The Superclasico doesn't even allow away fans after all the murders, that obviously doesn't just make it the best but it does highlight the level of passion involved.

All the big traditional English derbies have all lost something now the teams are full of players & managers from all the world...and half the ground is usually full of selfie-taking tourists...just lacks any real passionate edge.

Not big in any sense, but one rivalry I knew very little about until I moved north was the mill town derby....Blackburn v Burnley.
They fucking hate each other....who knew?

Was the hipster thing COPA90 Derby Days on youtube?

I thought those videos were pretty good, especially when you hear of the history of that rivalry, etc.
Shame there wasn't much footage inside the grounds though.

Some of the South American derbies looked bloody mental

It was yes, I've only watched a couple of them so far, Belgrade derby looked pretty insane and they didn't try filming around the game at all as they were told they wouldn't be safe. I wouldn't want to mess with some mad Serbian ultra.

In all derbies I tend to pick a side to prefer for some reason. In that one I'd definitely go for Blackburn, fuck Burnley.

Yeah it's a decent series, funny that one week they'd be at El Classico or in Russia and the next it was the South Coast derby

Some of the old Balkan countries had some insane rivalries I.e. were shooting at each other during the wars then that translates on to the pitch in ‘peacetime’. Celtic v Rangers is always a massive fixture, the hatred is unbelievable albeit that has softened a little over time. It’s great to see Celtic suffering at the moment which makes it even more fun!

Best one I've done is Hammarby v AIK. Only just made the flight back as the kick off was delayed for ages due to the pyros and fireworks filling the stadium with smoke. Was a bit tasty outside too.

Can't beat Beduff vs Nuneaton. That's tasty.

I went to the Milan derby years ago before Juventus were winning everything.

All the seats around me had burn marks in them from all the fireworks that get set off.

I saw fans try to climb the round towers on the San Siro and getting battered by the police with huge batons/sticks.

I’m from Serbian origin. Would love to see that derby. Red Star all the way.

The Rome Derby is heavy. Atmosphere was obviously very intense, but there was so much tension in the air. I actually thought Milan vs Juve was a better atmosphere overall (it was stunning).

There's some insane derbies in Italy... Livorno vs Pisa.... Catania vs Palermo... The Genoa Derby possibly the best of the well known ones.

I'd say you've got to head to the Balkans in Europe... Athens would be up there but away fans banned, so Belgrade probably takes it in Europe.

For me it's South America though.... Lunatic derbies all over the continent...

That wasn't around the same time as the Zlatan show was it?

I always wanted to go to Ajax vs Feyenoord. My first time in Amsterdam, I was about 17 and the year was 2009. Me and my mate were going to get tickets to the game but were informed they were going for 100 euros. It was a lot for us at the time and we decided to spend it on, ahem, other things.

As a result of that very match, both clubs were banned from having away supporters in that fixture for five years. I was informed this was because the fans were fire bombing each other!

Nah well after that. 2015 I think. Did it in a day. Flight was cheaper than my already cheap coach to Heathrow! Worth doing these games. Low cost and you get a great day out.

I went to the Vienna derby once. Austria against Rapid, it was in the national stadium which is 55k capacity if I remember but only about 15k there. Austria were the home team so Rapid fans were chucked well out into the corner but they showed you can make a hell of a noise, singing, pyrotechnics and those audio bombs just going off the whole time. Put English fans to shame.

It wasn't a derby, but I did go and see Dinamo Bucharest play a couple of years ago against Astra Giurgiu.

Was the worst game of football I had ever seen live. Didn't even look non-league level. Less than a thousand fans in the stadium, no booze for sale. Ticket was £7 roughly and each team had one chance each. It ended 1-1.

That’s not just relevant for the superclasico. There are no away supporters in Argentine football full stop.

The idea that Argentine derbies don't have passion because there are no away fans is insane. Of course it would be better if there were.... But they still piss over anything over here

I don’t think anyone has said that unless I’ve missed something? Quite the opposite.

Brum v Villa is always a lively one as Enkelman and Grealish will attest too.

In this country I'd say Blues Villa is one of the best/worst. I didn't think any of the other "big" English derbies come close to that.... And think there's more ferocity in lower league derbies...
