What I like about Bassette is he isn't scared of dishing out shit to the more senior pros if he doesn't get the ball where he wants it( where it should be on most occasions).

Great that someone so young, and new to the squad, has the arrogance to do that, exactly what a top striker needs, and he is going to be a top striker for us.

So he comes on for a 15minute stroll. Puts no pressure on their back 4 at all. In the air or on the deck. Sorry not good enough Lurka

Yet sets up 2-3 good chances to kill the game . Wasn't his fault our high press dropped off late in the game

Simms needs to start to make sure we get the right money for him in January, then it's Bertie all the way for the run in!

Some seriously shit takes. Simms is a quality striker.

I swear I'm watching a different game sometimes. Fucking hate how some people turn on players, constantly have to have a target to moan about. Weird nature to have. The guy scored a load last season and literally scored last match.

Bassette can play wide,so play both of them.
Simms was excellent against Watford, and scored. He won’t lose his place, and shouldn’t.

We had to drop it off because of the spaces Maddison occupies TBF. Many on here fail to recognise that there are two teams playing..

Bassette will be the new Gyokeres. 2025/26 will be the season of Norman bullying defences.

You can't drop Simms for him yet, but you have to say looking at Bassette - He looks some talent.

The passion, energy and intensity he plays with feels very.... Swedish.

I get a lot of stick for it, but I personally do not rate Simms as a player at all. Even when he was playing well the second half of last season, I just felt he was so awkward on the ball and not a good enough striker to take us to that next level. Bassette already looks a better player than Simms from the little we've seen of him in my opinion.

I thought Simms was brilliant last season but so far this season he’s gone back to being the player we saw for the first 15-ish games of last season - making half-arsed runs, not playing on the shoulder of the last man enough, moving back too slowly, just generally not playing with any fire in his belly. Bassette is the complete opposite of that and it allows players to put a hopeful long ball in and know we have a chance of making something from it.

I don’t think Simms is suddenly shit but Bassette is the player that looks more threatening and generally more on it atm. He should be regularly starting over Simms imo.

Bassette had a very good game today, but this was the absolute perfect opposition for him. He was facing one of the highest defensive lines in the country with absolutely no expectation of getting anything out of the game.

He will basically never have that much space to run in behind in a league game.

Bassett to me looks like a young left footed version of Vik. Gets into the channels, give him the ball and he runs at people, he’s slightly arrogant and aggressive. Going to be a hell of a player I think. Start him as much as possible I would say.

The ball in for the assist was sublime, Simms couldn’t even dream of playing a ball like that. Ellis needs to up his aggression and workrate now to keep his place.

I have a feeling those posters who criticised the club for bringing in Norman instead of a CM will be revising their opinions this season. Looks a real talent.

Very early days I know but...

I think Bertie is going to become first choice at some point this season.

He plays with an intensity and drive that Simms doesn't have. I like Simms so this isn't a bash simms thread, but he is so passive compared to Bassette who really led the line tonight. Our solid defence started with him.

He chases everything down and harries the opposition, whereas Simms is often found jogging round the centre circle.

He makes it easy for people to find him, ping the ball up and 9/10 times he will get there.

Personally, I would start him on Saturday.

Look Bassette had a good game lets not get carried away too soon, he has to work until Robins has no choice but to play him, Simms is holding the golden ticket and its up to him to lose it or should I say use it, its competition for places we need, unlike midfield, and we have players starting to compete for places in the starting line up now.

Still early days for me, but looks a prospect. His attitude and desire seem great, could see him being a little impetuous at times and potentially getting himself sent off.

Agree with the poster saying how the game was set-up for him to do well with the Spurs high line. The weight of his pass for the goal was perfect; we don’t have many players that could get that right. BTA didn’t even have to break his stride.

It’s a tough one because he deserves a start after his showing, surely you have to reward that performance with a start? But also, Simms character suggests his confidence could be knocked if he got dropped. Also, The Hounds pace against a tiring defence makes him the ideal sub?

I'm a big Simms fan but Norm made him look like a right lazy bastard last night. Simms definitely keeps his place for Swansea in my opinion, but Norm isn't far behind. I really hope Simms watches the game last night and it sinks into his head that he needs to at least look like he's running for the ball and being a nuisance. Because Norm done that for 70 minutes.

Ainnit. That's the real good news story here. It's not one vs. the other. We own both, on long deals, at the right age, and whoever plays will play on merit.

This.

Which is why just take positives last night, was excellent. Bar couple bits of premiership quality. Both there goals don’t happen in championship more than likely. You can always pick holes in stuff, yeah sheaf gave hospital pass for example

its frustrating of course, BUT if we take that level into the league we will win a lot of games - just got to start being clinical.

RE sheaf, people saying why risk him - he has to play at some point - can’t just wait .

Let’s not confuse style with ability. Both Simms and Wright play with a laconic style but they are absolutely talented players. The likes of Bassette and Thomas-Asante buzz about and that’s seen as work rate. It’s just playing styles

I guess you don’t see the other players during the game. They all have moments when they choose to hold back due to mis-placed/ weighted balls or chasing a lost cause. As for Simms last night, his forward play was good enough to change the game momentum with Mason-Clark very close X2. They were perfect deliveries and both players made a difference.

Got to have a boo boy…it .was King* at Watford as Eccles and Torp were playing well and simms had scored.

*the same king that sanctioned the purchase of Bassette… who everyone’s rightly raving about…knowing that we didn’t need another forward but probably not wanting to let a very exciting prospect slip though the net….boooo !

So reactionary as usual

I think the gameplay suited having the pacey front 3 so it made sense. In most league games we will have possession and be on the front foot so will that suit Bassette as much, remains to be seen. Simms as a focal point is something you don't realise you miss until he's not there.

Also there's no reason he can't play wide right with his skillset. I don't think anyone has convinced on right wing this season.

We needed another forward for the same reason we still need another CM.

Think it depends on how we want to play moving forward. Would love us to give up on the possession style and move back to countering from a low block like yesterday. If we do think Basset suits it much more due to his work rate and playing over the shoulder.

Simms hasn’t been used well so far in my opinion by the time, but feel he is always a decent option who will create chances for himself. Plus he’s physicality gives us another option.

Personally love the counter and think Basset would be amazing to start but what a option to have and future proofing for if simms leaves next year.

Issue there is most Championship teams won’t play like Spurs did and invite a counter attack. Nothing wrong with possession, the problem has been the tempo being far too slow and players not moving off the ball.

One or two touch football is how it needs to be done.

I must be missing the Simms skillset that would make him a good right wing player!
His problem as a target man is that he is so limited. Not great at holding up and laying off the ball, not great in the air, can't really control the ball and take it past a defender, doesn't chase and hassle defenders. He is good at bursts of speed into the box and has some strength.

To be fair works for West Brom and worked for us in our play off year. Take Swansea, they will press hard and try and keep possession. There will be space behind them.

Think some are missing the point. It's not about Simms being shit at all - he's a good player and should have had 2x assists last night.

But Bassette has a drive that tbf nobody else seems to, not just Simms. The way he plays I think is exactly what we need but again it's early days yet.

If we can find a way to play them together it might he a very interesting partnership. If it's like for like then I think Bassette will probably be a better fit long term but he will need to earn that by scoring goals, which he hasn't done yet.

The takeaway here should be that we are in such a good position to have a proven goalscorer that is being challenged by a young star in the making. How is anyone kicking off about that?
