Played better last game, but far from impressed with him this season. Despite the usual fan boys giving him 8 out of 10 in the majority of match rating threads regardless of performance, I'm still to be won over.

In an ideal world we would have a much stronger midfielder who is brave enough to attack the goal as well. In theory it should take a lot more at this level than just winning a tackle. He's been a weakness in many of our games in all seriousness.

Agree he's had a few off performances by his very high standards, but if you can't see what a player we have here I don't know what to tell you. Our most important asset with Hamer IMO.

Change the title of this thread to O'Hare and put a ridiculous stat in about how he has the highest running cadence out of any athlete on the pitch (or something equally as pointless/stupid) and this sub would be waxing lyrical, but post a stat about how Sheaf, a holding midfielder, is making the most successful tackles in the league and people aren't convinced. Braindead.

That’s him nailed on for a 10/10 performance today then.

Why does Sheaf need to attack as well? We are scoring plenty of goals from midfield and someone needs to do the dirty work. He’s a fantastic Championship DM who’s hopefully emerging from a rare dip in form.

We've only just started scoring from midfield. Up until a few games ago we have been really lacking in that department. Despite playing a few key passes, if he gets too far forward he often kills our attacks because he shits himself so much.

If a dip in form is the entire season so far, then you're right. As SickBoy says though, he's guaranteed to have a stormer today.

Surely it’s not Sheaf’s job to score/create goals in this team? It’s just not the role he’s sent out to play.

If you're playing two midfielders one of them has to sit and do the dirty work. You can't have them both bombing on towards goal like Hamer does.

As well as tackling, running is also an important part of football. You may not have noticed

You wouldn't expect him to do so as often as Palmer and O'Hare but he should be contributing more than he does. Yes he is a defensive midfielder but I think he has only scored in one game for us? And how many assists has he had.

I rate him but this season until last week he has been poor, even defensively. His lack of pace is also a serious weakness which is why I don't think he will ever play at a higher level.

My own observations on Sheaf are that he's been asked to do a slightly different role this year and do more of the midfield dirty work himself to give Hamer a bit more freedom up the pitch. Throw in the run of games prior to that where we went very defensive to grind out clean sheets and it's not hard to see why he's contributing a bit less at the other end of the pitch than previous seasons.

Conceded 7 goals in the last 12 games, including 8 clean sheets and he's been a big part of that, despite not being in top form.

He is a defensive midfielder who averaged a couple of goals a season which is what you’d expect from sheaf

If Watford had a Sheaf type player yesterday they'd gave won. All that possession but no one to put their foot on it and use it intelligently.

Sheaf developing into a top player has loads of possession in every match his stats compare with any in this division. Another player who attractive criticism from this sites doomsters, along with Bidwell, Eccles, Allen, Wilson, bloody hell they are running out of who to turn onto next

Sheaf just isn't consistent enough, I've been saying it for ages. If he can add that then he can go as far, if not further than the 'big 3'.

And that's a valid criticism as far as I'm concerned it's not turning on anyone.

But then again, if he was, like if Vik was a better finisher, like if Callum added more goals, then he/they, probably wouldn't be here

Lack of pace for the premiership is possibly an issue.

He’s not the same player but it was a big issue for John Eustace and why he spent his career in the championship

I've never really thought about how fast, or slow, he is.
Going to watch that over the next couple of games.

He covers a lot of ground which doesn’t always gets noticed but he’s read a situation and is there speed of thought is as important as pace and he lets the ball do the work.

Now I am as much of a fan of Sheaf as anyone, apart from Sick Boy of course, but comparing him with Claude Makalele is going a bit far.
