L1 though, we’re two and a half seasons later and have had glaring holes in the squad since McCallum was sold. Meanwhile we’ve signed quality everywhere else on the pitch.

@Londonccfcfan prove me wrong, we’ve not made a permanent signing in either of those positions since Rose first season in L1.

Paid money for a LB.

Plus... Rose was the Promotion season wasn't he? (Second season in L1).

Your confusing depth in those positions.
I was talking about first team. After that the depth falls off a cliff.

My bad I though we got him January first season.

Paid what for an U23 LWB though? Point is everywhere else we’ve signed first team players who have significantly moved us on. Didn’t expect it to get such a reaction TBH, I thought it was self evident we’ve had trouble recruiting there since promotion.

Depth comes from buying improvements though. We’ve got depth up front because we brought in players who were as good or better, same at RWB, GK, CM. But we’re playing RWBs at LWB and CB because we haven’t been able to improve on the L1 back three or LWB really aside from a couple of loans.

We won’t buy depth in, we’ll buy better then Hyam/Rose/etc will become backup.

I don't disagree about needing to strengthen the positions. But it's perhaps not a blind spot but more that we haven't been able to find players within budget for the positions. I seriously doubt we aren't looking for them, but if they aren't going to improve upon the options we have them loans are the far more sensible option given our restraints.
You could also say that given we had one of the best defences in league one when we got promoted (from memory?) It wasn't the priority last summer. And clearly it was in the attacking department this summer just gone. I'm confident that it will be be the area we focus on come the end of the season, and that's the reality of where we are at. It has to be gradual. It's simply not possible to overhaul every area each season.

I don't think Sheaf would enjoy watching this. Chasing shadows in that first half.

Trying to play the role of 2 men with Hamer clearly not fit alongside him perhaps?
It wasn't him that consistently kept giving WBA the ball back. Only he & Fadz really came out of that game with much credit imo.

I mean this was also in a half where we had, out of choice, played a short wing back at CB and another with dubious fitness in midfield.

It's amazing seeing people's selective memories for things because they dislike Sheaf. Literally rewriting things that have happened so they don't need to acknowledge he has been decent.

Meanwhile, Hamer or O'Hare give it away then people start singing their name.

While you make a fair point initially I don't see why you have to bring Hamer and O'Hare into the argument. It ends up with Sheaf's greatest supporters blindly slagging off O'Hare and Hamer the same way they accuse Sheaf's detractors of doing to him.

All 3 of them make mistakes, and did so on Saturday, but all have qualities too, and there is a place for all 3 to play in the team. They have all played their part in our good start to the season and when one of them is missing the team is weaker for it. Whatsmore they all have the potential to improve further so I fail to see the need to slag any of them off, although I guess that would make for a dull messageboard!

It isn't at all, it is just comparing the reaction to them.

Why do we feel the need to criticise one of our better performing players this season ?
Sheaf adds to the performance of the team, and we are better with him in it.

For what? Despite what you think Nick, I don't have an agenda against Sheaf.

I've praised him for about 6 weeks now.

However, that video makes him look like a lost pup.

I've said many times before on this. It's where Sheaf gives it away that results in greater moaning from the stands. It panics people. O'Hare gives the ball away loads, but there's 9 men behind him.

And that's not me being critical. Hamer and O'Hare are pretty footballers who run around, do the nice things. Sheaf is slow, a bit awkward looking on the ball. Therefore fans will turn quicker.

He does some fantastic things. He was outstanding against Sheffield United and great against Bournemouth.

Robins mentioned the tendency to play blind passes in one of his interviews recently I believe in reference to sheaf. Although could well have been a general comment to.

But I think you are right, Hamer and O'Hare are nicer on the eye (football wise before there are any comments) and so fans appreciate them more. Sheaf isn't as dynamic and isn't going to be the player to do a 50 yard run, but he is a really good footballer for us, and will certainly only get better.

Spot on. Playing in his position, he's likely to make those mistakes. Like others in this team, the reason he's playing for Coventry and not in the Premier League is because of those misplaced passes and inconsistency.

It's clear in that video he's covering the whole of midfield on his own as well.

It's a highlight reel for that particular player, what were you expecting? It's not likely to show the times Sheaf stopped him, played past him etc is it?

He was alright, got better in the second half.

His performance wasn't even close to the two he put in at Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

That and the fact West Brom sat off which allowed Sheaf and the rest of the midfield greater control.

The first half when West Brom came at us, the whole midfield were poor. Granted, Hamer was injured.

Honestly, based on what?

There's a reason Villa are looking at Hamer and we haven't heard anyone looking at Sheaf.

Sheaf will have a great Championship career. Hamer will be playing for a PL side this time next year.
