Bans...a good thing? (1 Viewer)

Following my week-long ban (not quite sure why banter with a fellow CCFC fan would lead a grown up to treat this like school and go running to teacher :thinking about:), I have been considering our disciplinary record last season.

Apart from the red card bans, we didn't have many players suspended due to yellow card accumulation, did we?

A good thing? Shows discipline?

Maybe....or maybe this also reveals one of the reasons we were relegated...a lack of physical presence...particularly in midfield, thus allowing opposition teams to dominate.

On Saturday, for example, who put their foot in to upset the rhythm of the likes of Lallana...too easy a ride, perhaps?

On another note, thanks to Dave P from Willenhall (aka Cheever) for his supportive comments in recents days...I hear a certain admin has been given you hassle via PM???!!!

I'll be honest mate I didn't notice you'd gone. What did you do? I imagine that it must be pretty bad for a longstanding member to given a warning. I'm glad I've not been banned yet or I would properly have thrown all my toys out of the pram.

Any chance of getting an over 18's part of the forum Nick? I accept that this is a family forum and concerning CCFC so others shouldn't have to be offended and put off using the site, but I'm a sad git who quite likes to see gratuitous swearing, the occasional arguments/rucks ... even links to rude jokes and porn . I know its mostly unnecessary and there are plenty of other sites for those things, but we could password protect or parental control one part of the board, so that people have a choice.

I think it shows that perhaps we displayed naivety at times - an example I can think of is Notts Forest's first goal away when McCleary ran a good 70 yards unchallenged. Maybe if Norwood, Deegan or Thomas had chopped him down around the halfway line and taken the yellow, the result could have been different. I am in favour of players taking a tactical yellow card if needs be, but just don't think we were quite wise enough to it this season

Personally I preferred the Boothroyd team, when other teams knew they were going to get a rough ride when the visited the Ricoh. I see this as one of the contributing factors to our demise this season.

Maybe it would have helped if we had been a bit more physical in midfield, but considering how thin the squad was a few suspensions would have really hurt us so not so straightforward.

Yep, none. Bigi's red early on turned his displays a fair bit more timid-and Thorn castigating him will likely have put off his younger teammates from getting stuck in.

Agreed, but I can't help but wonder if we wouldn't have won 7-9 more points if we had been more physical/harder to beat...

I'll admit that I was gutted when AB was sacked. He was doing a fantastic job until he asked for Money because of the injuries. The football although not an attractive style was entertaining because we did have players showing a bit of brute force and we were winning games and scoring goals.

Look at the other end of the spectrum-Brighton had the worst record by far (like 90 yellows or something crazy like that)-and finished mid table. There's probably a point where missing players through suspension costs you more than it gains on the pitch by being more intimidating.

As for the AB argument...I agree with one thing...you need to mix it up...mix up your tactics, mix up your style of play, be hard to beat first and foremost.

AT's philosphy is romantic and the purists love it....but in the 3rd tier of English league, it will be naive in the extreme...

I think AT's style can work very well as I believe Swansea have demonstrated, but you need a top quality striker waiting to put the ball away once the hard work has been done. This is THE thing that we are lacking. I have no doubt in my mind that Marlon King's goals alone would've kept us up this season.

Their position is down to more than just that My point is that losing too many through suspension isn't something we had the squad for.

Yeah but if they were unavailable through a ban they might not have got injured

We weren't just not dirty enough, we were not physical enough and not big enough. Out played, out batlled and often out jumped - especially at set pieces. Our conversion rate of goals from free-kicks and corners over the past season must be among the worst in existence.

Fair comment, Rich...but I think the space Swansea are afforded in the Premier will not be available in Division 3.

My single worry about AT is that neither he - nor Weasel - will have/employ the tactics needed to succeed at the level we find ourselves at...which is a more 'agricultural' form of the game than we have experienced in recent seasons.

I just see the likes Baker and Bell being bullied off the ball....and the young kids will know they have been in a game.

On the other hand, I see Platt doing well....whether he can cope with the physical demands of the games/volume of games remains to be seen....

Certainly think we will need a bit more steel/a proper ball winner in midfield next season as we were very weak in the challenge all season even the 'Pitbull' who seems to be made of glass. I would like to an older head like a Shaun Derry type in there just to win the ball and play it simple and let the youngsters play round him. Carsley did that for Boothroyd and it seemed to coincide with him getting injured when things went tits up.

Doyyle never did enough for me either but I always stood up for him on here and the CET site on the basis that whenever he was in the side our results were better. I'm unsure whether that was down to luck rather than him, but either way if it means more games won then It makes me happier. For me the spell he looked really poor was when we had him with Stephen Hughes (who I also liked initially) and Michael Hughes. Equally it may show that he was better with better players because I thought he was excellent alongside Dennis Wise.

I agree 0 physicality in our side throughout the whole season, only player who wasn't afraid to put in the boot was Keogh.
