Who was positive about Julian Darby?

I actually was(!) thought he offered us a goal threat from midfield, and was underrated... although that's still damned with faint praise really, as could he have been rated lower by most?

What is not sensible about discussing Julian Darby's role for us, and the fact he offered a link between midfield and attack that was otherwise missing?

I really didn't rate him at all unfortunately. I thought he was very poor. Too many misplaced passes and too lightweight.

I was there when he scored away at Swindon Town the year they were in the top flight. My one decent memory of him!

Telfer used to infuriate me. At times he was incapable of passing the ball even 5 yards. Was always giving any possession.

Interesting Darby and Telfer have been mentioned in this thread. Darby wasn't great but I think underated. One of those players who fans would ignore three good things he did and pick up on one bad thing. Meanwhile fans liked Telfer because he ran around alot. Normally due to him having no positional sense.

Thought Darby ran around a lot and Telfer self confessed his dislike for football and preferred playing golf (with his mate Strachan)

That's nothing, Paul Telfer, not only stole a living, he kidnapped it, held it hostage and then shot it after a 72 hour police standoff.

Darby looked good when he played with Chris Marsden for a short while in Dec / Jan 93-94. Technically decent, and could finish but he was lightweight, and shirked challenges and was often anonymous. Those dark days of David Rennie, Julian Darby, Sean Flynn

Darby was better than is widely accepted. He played in a team that finished mid table in the PL and contributed quite a few goals in the process. There have been many far worse than him that have played for us over the years, particularly as we slipped down the leagues.

Fk me I know we get nostalgic over time and also time heals, but I can't ever remember disliking a player as much as Darby. Not sure if true but think he was Neal's brother in law and the only reason he was around.

Never rated Darby and thought he was shite!!

However, never quite got the hatred for Telfer and thought he always put in a shift and was better than people seem to remember. Granted his "special relationship" with Strachan didn't help.

How we stayed in the top division defied logic, Cobi Jones, Jenkinson, Gould, Rennie, Gayle, Darby…a weak team but others must have been bloody awful.

I overheard Strachan once when he was watching from the Director’s box. He said that Telfer followed instructions better than any other player in the squad.

Telfer used to infuriate me but he was obviously told to stay put, break up play and be in certain areas of the pitch at certain times rather than be a creative player.

I must admit I was about 10/11 when he left, I just imagine younger me couldn’t understand what he did.
I probably would appreciate him a bit more now

Doesn't reflect overly well on Strachan's instructions...

Much like Gallagher will always be special because he was my first favourite player, I’ll always remember Darby as the first player I thought was terrible. And David Rennie.
