I see Leicester didn't even hit 28K at the weekend. Won't be long until we're the best supported the club in the league.

If we manage 31,086 tomorrow our average will hit 30K after 7 matches. Lovely stuff.

what is the deal with the enemy, i assumed theyd have some sort of stage in the crowd rather than on the pitch? no idea really?

The crowds at Championship level are outstanding. Go back to our last year in the Championship before relegation. The likes of Leeds and Leicester only averaging 23,000.
Boro only 17,000 and ourselves as low as 15k.

Derby's is pretty impressive, have they historically had a good following? They havent exactly had much success in recent seasons.

Given how things are going at Leicester we must be in with a very good chance of topping that list soon

It's only because of 2 poor away followings recently, that we aren't top already.

Which will continue unfortunately. Albion sales are poor, Bristol City won't bring many for a Cat A in December, and there will be very few Swansea fans. Expect Charlton to bring a load though.

That’s really interesting. I wonder what that is down to? In a time where cost of living has roared and people supposedly have less money in the pocket

I think it's because while there's more football than ever on TV, people understand how good it is to be there in person.

A bit like gigs. You can listen to any song now, but you can't replace the feeling of being there.

We had better crowds in the 70’s so I’m told…

Yes, we were the best supported Midlands club in the early 70s getting more than the Villa who were on a downward cycle.
This followed the Jimmy Hill revolution when we had over £51K against Wolves and possibly more against Sunderland in the cup when supporters broke a gate down.
Our first two seasons in the top flight had high attendances. 37k and 34k come to mind.
What screwed us was not employing Clough who said we were a bigger club than Derby despite their success.
We got Cantwell who changed Jimmy Hill's free scoring approach to total defence. We struggled and crowds dropped off.
Then hooliganism came along which meant attendances plummeted everywhere,

Yeah, Leeds ripped all the seats out at Highfield Rd.
We were ahead of the curve too soon with an all seater.
In a biography of Robinson, it says he tipped off McGinnity about impending all seater stadiums and our lifetime President until his demise made a mint.

Perhaps but Tv always used to affect attendances. You’d say “good attendance considering it was on sky” etc..

Now you can watch every game on TV or even on your phone whilst out, it’s amazing to me how attendances have improved so much.

Never really thought about it until your earlier post.

My two penneth is it's still a hangover from covid. People REALLY missed going to the football, and watching it on TV with no crowds or atmosphere was just shit so we all flocked back afterwards. And once you've caught the bug again it's difficult to give up, even if your wallet's being squeezed elsewhere.

It’s also the highest level of the game you can realistically turn up on the day and get a ticket.

It’s a (usually) good standard and there is much more likelihood of a competitive game where the underdogs have a chance. Sheff Weds for all their woes are more competitive than Wolves or West Ham .

There's a few obvious reasons why we're doing well on the attendance front to be fair.

We've been relatively successful over the last few years compared to the depths of the Sisu years. That in itself brings more of a feel good factor and will bring more people to the table.

W&$ps went bust. Them owning the ground was truly dreadful and seeing their logos plastered all over the place, coinciding with us being at rock bottom, meant the CBS/Ricoh wasn't a great place to be.

And that also links with identity. The last 5 years has seen a huge improvement in our identity. I think amongst other fanbases, we're nicely looked upon as a club who have had bad times in the last 10-15 years and a lot of fan bases genuinely wish us well because of that. I think we've gone further than that...owning the stadium now, having two great managers in succession, playing food football, a passionate fanbase, being run a lot more professionally, the FA Cup SF vs Utd and that comeback and rendition of WLADITT....it all points to increased attendances.

A lot of pride in being a CCFC fan at the minute. Long may it continue.

Winning the title twice in the 70's left Derby a legacy they still enjoy now - considering the size of the place their numbers at home games have been consistent whichever division

Thinking back around ten years ago, perhaps even sooner, I would never have thought I'd see us averaging 30,000 in my lifetime. It's quite incredible really.

Fair chance we’d be above the HR best attendance/averages during the Hill era if we had the terraces.

Remember a thread on here where there were lots of posters saying we will never be a big club and will never fill the then Ricoh.
Of course it could go both ways, but when you have been in Highfield Rd with 51k fans, if we keep winning, and go up and a big if, consolidate, the sky's the limit.

Pretty sure the only time away fans have sold out their allocation is when we’ve changed them £45

True. Otherwise, Norwich were about 100 shy of selling out their allocation, but no one else has come close.

No chance they brought that many. Probably the lowest away following of the season so far. Blocks 6 & 9 were empty, 8 was only full at the front. Block 7 was about 80% full.

I was under the impression that they had sold their allocation. Disappointing to see 29.5 as I was hoping for 31k.

It looked like it filled up as the game went on, at the start it looked empty. There was an accident on the M1 near Derby which could have held some up.

On the subject of attendances, interesting to learn that Big Ron was on £1 per person in attendance over a base figure (13000?)

I think the fact that the Championship is now considered to be one of the most entertaining leagues in the world may have something to do with it.
Also many people are fed up with the mega overhyped and overpaid players in the PL and only those very few clubs with hideously wealthy foreign ownership can win it ..To say noting of the lack of home grown talent.
I know which league I'd prefer to watch PUSB

I can confirm that having heard Big Ron say the same in an after dinner speech.

On the subject of that podcast, they were a bit up BR's arse and his version of events isn't at all how I recall them, although in fairness to Jim, if he wasn't nice to him then there's no way he would answer any of the questions. It was quite an interesting listen though and particularly the piece about Jarni. Still not sure I believe it and assume we already had that deal sorted unless BR was hoodwinked too, but a nice anecdotal tale all the same.
